75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 or 90-300mm f/4.5-5.6

I am a happy owner of a new Canon EOS 350D Rebel XT and I am just looking forward buying my lens collection in the forecoming weeks and months.

I have 2 candidates for tele, which are the
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM and the Canon EF 90-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM.

Do you have any experiences which one is more worthy to buy? Thank you very much in advance.

Why is the 90-300mm listed as a prime?

I don't have experience with either but it looks as if they are both the same price so I would go with the 75-300mm. Only because it will give you a wider range but not much. Also I still have my Quantaray for sale. I just haven't had time to put it there yet. But the Canon lens is a lot better.

Thank you rex, I think you are right. There is a special discount for the 90-300mm here in Hungary, but may be because the 75-300mm is better and noone takes the 90-300mm. :-)

I just looked around and I spotted a third favourite:
Canon EF 28-200 f/3.5 - 5.6 USM
I am thinking about it, because for the first time, it's a more friendly lens for everyday use. I thought if I read hundreds of specifications I will be more clever, but I am even more confused than ever.

I've never seen the 90-300, so I'm not sure if it's still in production.
The 75-300 is being phased out as they'll probably get the non IS version of the new 70-300 IS from Canon. Apparently, with the new zoom, as the barrel extends to past 200mm, if you hold the camrea for a verticle composition, the barrel may move and cause soft images. Canon's response has pretty been "what do you expect for $600 lens?"

I'd say consider the Sigma 70-300 APO or the new Tamron 70-300 Di that was just introduced. The currentl Canon 75-300 is just too soft from 200mm on and has lots of CA and poor colors in my view compared to other lenses such as the Sigma.

That kit lens you have is a very good al around lens. Use it I woould also suggest something like the Sigma but whatever you feel is best for you. Just think it through.

Thank you yido, rex, the Sigma 70-300 APO is really persuasive. Look at this photo taken with it:

If there is really no post-process here except USM, then it simply ROCKS!!! It was worth to ask, because I wasn't really sure about the 2 lenses I mentioned first.

I had the 90-300, bought it in Dubai duty free. I used it for a week or so and sold it on ebay the very next week. The images were so soft I coudn't get a crisp image at all.

Not seen the 75-300, but the 75-3000 IS is excellent if a little soft at the far end of the zoom.
