Prolly wouldnt have mattered Didnt TEAM Canada go in scoring 36-2, Thats throwing your some attitude!

That was really bad of Canada. Even Don Cherry said it was bad sportsmanship and very un-Canadian.

Ok. So this means that Australia has to stop winning so many medals in swimming to give other countries a break. Lance Armstrong should have given other cyclists a chance to win the Tour de France by pedalling slower or retiring eariler. As if.

Other countries are powerhouses in various sports. Canada is a hockey powerhouse. Is it our fault that we have been including girls/women in serious hockey for over 20 years now while other countries haven't? I think not.

It was explained today that Canada was scoring huge because they promised themselves before the tournament began that they wouldn't let themselves become complacent and wanted to work on scoring first and foremost after not being able to score against the U.S. team in the last World Championships. If some people find this poor sportsmanlike, that's fine, but I don't see it that way. Italy was only in the tournament because of a free-pass for hosting, and they themselves only had huge praise for the Canadian team and the thrill of simply being able to play. I can guarantee you that the Canadian girls didn't rub it in after the game or grandstand those scores or anything else that would have been *truly* unsportsmanlike.

I think it's funny how Canada's hockey team has been brought up in a thread about US sportsmanship. Blame Canada, eh, Buzzrock? :-P

I'm not sure, but will go out on a limb here... aren't teams' standings partly determined by score? Thus if two teams, say USA & Canada went undefeated on their respective sides of the playoff pyramid, the team with more points via score will end up with the top seed in the finals and the advantage where it's really needed.

P.S. Frisca, shame on you. I've applied to have you immediately ejected from Canada, along with Don Cherry.

Well, I'll defend my position a bit. I am, of course, making blanket statements here and there are great athletes that come from the US. However, the american culture seems to be one of showboating and winning poorly. One doesn't need look much further than the NFL where highlights involve the latest touchdown dance or T.O signing a football with a sharpie.

Using professional sports, particularly pointing out some individuals in the NFL, to support your anti-American position is weak.

Oh yeah, and I won't forget the women's hockey final in Salt Lake City. When the US team put a Canadian flag on the floor in their locker room as a carpet. And how the US ref was so obviously biased.

These would be the only reasons I need to be sweepingly anti-American. But I just chalk it up to a culture thing.

Don Cherry isn't really credible. He was insulting the Canadian athletes from the beginning with regards to who was going to carry the flag.

Hehe. Don's no genious, just a retired goon, turned coach, turned entertainer. He's never been credible.

Yup. He's loud even when he's not talking. Someone should sic Triny and Suzanna on him. It would make an interesting program of 'What Not to Wear'.

1) Hating showboating is a far cry from hating my country.

2) Do I have to root for my country in sports? If I like underdogs, can't I root for them?

3) If one is required to move out of the country because one is unhappy with something, how many people would be left?

4) I watched the actual event last night. I agree it was a youthful mistake. However, I think we do not do nearly enough to coach our athletes in the ways of civility and globally accepted behavior. They aren't in America, and shouldn't act like they are. Jacobellis obviously knew she did something wrong as she immediately tried to cover her tracks in the interview. If she knew it was wrong, and we knew it was wrong, why not call a spade a spade?

Actually Jacobellis' most endearing quality was she was such a bad liar. She practically choked on the word "stability" in the interview. She knew she wasn't telling the truth. I think that probably shows she felt bad about it all. We've all been there and I bet she learns from it. It's too bad it was a lesson learned in front of so many people with so much at stake.

But without me and the other sux, this place wouldn't be worth living in... ;)

Is it irony to point out that your disapproval of the "sux" of the country would be the same as my disapproval of the "showboaters"? Should I save you a seat on the bus? (PS: this is all in fun. I'm not getting riled here.)

I was under the impression we were all just having good fun. I agree that showboating sux. T.O. is one of the worstfor this. The problem is that teams and sponsors will keep signing them because people will keep buying their products. Which I do the same. I buy NFL and College proiducts a lot and go to a lot of Braves games. But I can only blame myself for their salaries and attitudes. If we all stopped buying the gear and going to wathc I gaurantee things would change for the better.

Today's NY Times had an Editorial on Ms. Jacobellis ("You Go Lindsey").

As they "admonished" her, "What did she think these were -- Games?"

What is that sport that Canada's supposed to be good at? Ummmm... I can't remember.....Ummmm. Maybe I can find out by using this link.

I don't like the whole snowboarding competitions either.. half pipe is retarded.. won by a bunch of 14-18 year old kids. I asked a friend why there's not any older people, he said "that's cause all the older people are drug heads"

I snowboard myself.. it's fun. but it doesn't belong in the olympics. Reminds me of x-games. Totally retarted. couldn't help but notice the camera guys moving there cameras around in odd angles when somebody had a good run on the halfpipe..

Yah, we lost. Switzerland had a hot goalie that turned aside 49 shots. Kudos to a Swiss team that played unbelievable.

Being a poor winner helps prove that american people aren't poor sportsmen... how?

Didn't say it did. But I can prove to you that American people aren't poor sportsmen. I'm a great sport and an American. Therefore American people aren't poor sportsmen - correct?

Right. Great sport. Way to prove *that* ;)

I think it does prove it. If you say that Americans are poor sports and I'm a good sport then doesn't it take away the merit of the comment? If I was to say that Canadians are 2 ft tall and you are 6 ft wouldn't that take away the merit of my comment? Now if I were to say that some Canadians are 2 ft tall then I would still have merit. As foolish as this rebuttal may sound it's still good for semantics and the way someone might take offense to be lumped into one category. Of course, me being American, you think I'd be used to it by now. :)

But you lost all claims to being a good sport by virtue of your first post, so it's all moot.

No further comments.

As Rex said, I thought we were just having good fun. I can see now this obviously goes deeper than hockey. Oh well. Like I said, you think I'd be used to it by now.
