Howdy,
I am interested in getting a trigger but have a few questions. I only have the 420EX and so have no way of manually setting the flash. I would like to be able to place this flash somewhere (not on the hotshoe) and be able to trigger it remotely whislt still using TTL metering, is there such a trigger or do you always need a light meter when using a trigger?
Thanks for your expertise folks

Well, you can get an ST-E2 transmitter, but it's not reliable from a far distance (uses IR for triggering). A 550 or 580 EX could also trigger the 420, and a 550 (used) isn't too much more than a new ST-E2, so you might look into that.
There is no other way to trigger the flash wirelessly and retain ETTL, at least no other way I know of.

I have an ST-E2, a 550EX and a 420EX.
I have found that indoors the set up is very stable, but outdoors I do get a few misfires. You basically have to have line of sight for the IR to work.
Don't know of any other mechanism which will replicate this and still retain ETTL
