So much for the theory that you should buy a mac to be safe from viruses...

//today.reuters.com/news/newsarticle.aspx?type=internetNews&storyid=2006-02-17T012934Z_01_N16227596_RTRUKOC_0_US-APPLE-VIRUS.xml&rpc=22

I am sure as macs continue to gain popularity they will probably become more of a target. At the moment though they are still much better on not getting viruses.

I really think that apple should just allow the OS x operating system to go onto any PC at this point. Now that they are using intel chips there really isn't that much of a hardware difference between the mac and pc.

I read this its some type of bug which looks like a jpg file, really not much to worry about just dont open attachments that you dont know about. I read that its and email or file that you download claiming to be the a sneek peek at the new operating system. Also that it attaches itself to iChat but I dont use iChat I use another program so I am not worried about it at all

But you really have to be brain dead to open it and let it get in your computer

here is what I read

I've never had a virus on my Linux box, but I did go to a website the other day saying my registry was corrupt and it will scan my computer to fix it. I thought sure go ahead, as there's no registry on a Linux machine. The script quit when it realised it wasn't gonna happen. I'm sure more and viruses will come out for Mac and Linux as more people realise it's so easy not to use Micro$oft and switch over to the light side.

I'm a heavy online PC user. Microsoft for fifteen years. I'VE NEVER HAD A VIRUS!

I've helped dozens of people who had viruses. When I say dozens, I means over one hundred, easily.

Q. Why do people get viruses?

A. They don't think. (That's a kind way of saying... stupidity). ;-)

From what I hear(directly from apple) is that Windows is creating a Universal OS. So Macs and PCs will all be sharing the same applications, and viruses for that matter.

True, If you do run windows, you really have to keep that firewall up at all costs, and check the ports frequently for programs that decide to open them.

I installed windows a few months ago to check out a program for sumone. In the first 5 min of being on the net (to download a firewall and updates) it was under attack. Didn't take much to get rid of them, but I was impressed at the speed they got on there.

There are so many ways to get viruses using a PC. I have never opened a starnge e-mail attachement or any exe. file at they still figure out ways to get in.

My pc was riddled a week back and I had to run a full system recovery which is pretty extreme. Still not back to normal and I had to reload a ton programs which took hours.

I already have a new ibook that I think is ok at best. Some programs on it run slow as shizzle and downloading images takes forever. Still when I get the cash, I'll probably go full Mac.

"I read this its some type of bug which looks like a jpg file, really not much to worry about just dont open attachments that you dont know about."

Guess what, the same is true for most PC viruses. "I love you" worked the same way. But how do you know the attachment isn't a virus? It looks like a JPG, and it came from a friend. So you open it *BAM* your Mac is sMacked by the virus.

The risk is there for all computers, wise practices reduce the risk. Nothing eliminates it....thankfully, the virus that makes your ice cream in your fridge melt is in fact a hoax.

I've also made an observation:

People who get viruses surf porn. Or maybe it's people who surf porn get viruses.

A couple of years ago my neighbour came knocking on my door in a panic because a porn applet kept popping up from his system tray, and his wife would be home soon.

I laughed, and laughed, and laughed. I fixed it for him, but will never let him forget about it.

If Windows is creating a new OS all by itself I think we're all in trouble... ;)

It's not a virus. It's not even a worm despite what they say in the article. It's a trojan. It doesn't propagate on its own, a user has to manually run it.

And for what it's worth, there are quite a few viruses for the Macintosh Operating System (prior to switching to Darwin/OSX). The first virus to exist in the wild was actually for an Apple computer.
