Are there effective methods of dealing with chromatic abberations? For example, in this shot:
there are visible blue and green shifted colours. This is a 100% crop of the problem area:
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Please feel free to download the 100% crop and experiment.
Many thanks! |

Some of the RAW converters are pretty effective at dealing with CA, so if you shot it RAW, look at what settings are available in your converter. It can also be dealt with manually, but it is tedious, and not always entirely effective.

The times I have had to deal with it, manually running the sponge tool over it in desaturation mode seems to work, but like Kirbic says, it is tedious. |

I asked this same question in the DPreveiw's retouching forum, and got a very nice suggestion. Here's the result:

The method is to create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, then reduce the brightness of the Blues and Greens (adjusting the range of the affected colours using the slider at the bottome), the invert the mask (Ctrl-I), and paint with white over the problem areas to reveal the fixed colours. This is the forum thread, for those who are interested:

If you're shooting RAW and using Photoshop CS2 there is a menu item to correct abberations. |

excellent method, if this happens a lot you might want to buy DXO optics program for fixing lens defects. I hear it works very well, but I haven't used it myself.

For the record: before resorting to asking this in a forum, I tried the following methods, which all did not do a satisfactory job: Nicon Capture's own method (I *did* shoot RAW), Adobe Camera Raw, PTLens, and PhotoShop's lens correction filter. |
