Managed to aquire my new Nikon D200 this evening - what a lovely bit of kit. Just like my D100 in all the best ways, but with lots of cool new things. Simply can't believe how quickly it can take pictures.

Best get back into this challenge lark, it's been a while!

Do any of the other D200 owners have any "must do" tips for the setup of the camera?

Tip #1: Pack up the D200
Tip #2: Ship it to me
Tip #3: I will ship my D50 to you upon arrival of the D200!

ELGordo, I don't know how you you can even suggest something so ludicrous!
Jamester is in the UK, the postage to New Mexico would be way too much, he should obviously ship it to me in the uk...

to retain the topic of the OP ;)

what i do is go to custom setings & zero everything /
take everything off automatic xcept WB
so no sharpening no tones hue contrast ..etc
that way i don't have to undo the camera in NC later ..
right now i make sure the camera shoots in compressed since i don't have big cards :(

set focus for af button only (warning >> if other people borrow your camera this is very confusing ..<<)
set for adobe color space default
set front aux button for spot metering

i get mine back (2nd time ) from servicing on FRIDAY firday friday ....

Thanks for that Ralph.

I've already set it to Adobe colour space, and that seemed to help things in Photoshop. Also got that newfangled raw image file to use with CS2.

It seems so easy to fill up a 1 GB CF card now - I've been using the RAW+JPG a lot, and you can rattle of a load of pics without ever even noticing the buffer. In fact, I'll probably just set it to RAW with compression as Photoshop is so good at handling the RAW files, and they seem so much criper. With my D100 it just took such a long time to write out a NEF, I never used it much.

The other thing I *love* is being able to use my SB800 remotely now, which makes for lots of fun with the flash.

Here are a few of the pictures I've taken:

and this is probably time to introduce Caitlin, 7 weeks old today. She's already getting used to posing for the camera!

Congrats on buying a sweetie camera! I was losing interest in photography for a while then I bought the D200 and now I am back fully. The best camera I've ever had. I have no complaints about it at all. The only thing that does bug me, and already mentioned here, is that my 1 gig card only takes 60 NEFs and then it is full.

Take the auto rotate function out, I notice there is a quality reduction when it is on.
