I think linking a resized original from the top winners would be beneficial to all. It would provide a visual comparison for what's allowed in basic and advanced. Personally, I love to view the before and afters as it's a great way to learn. |

That would be pretty cool. I like your idea. ;^)

I like your idea too.
In that way it would help novice like me to see what is possible to do.

Although I would semi-expect an uproar from this suggestion I do still love it personally! I need to learn! And that would be a huge help. However, some people probably would rather keep their magic a secret.

The commenting in challenges is very sparse, so you can't really learn from that. In light of that, I think a before and after from the top winners is an excellent idea. That way everyone can take something away.

I still think this would be great! |

What if the photographer would like to keep his originals away from the public eye?

If they are not willing to post the original then they shouldn't enter the challenges. I'm not sure that I'm following you. Why wouldn't you want to post the original? |

Just one example: there may have been a person cropped from the original whose identity/location can't be revealed for either legal or personal reasons. |

Unless I'd cheated, I'd be proud to show off an original that I scored high with.
On either side of the coin... if it had a lot of editing, then it shows off skills in processing, and if it had little, it shows off skills at taking the actual shots. :) |

I would never post my original. Period. I have enough of a hard time sending it in to be verified.

I think the thought was, resize the original to the same scale as the submission. I think that gets around the very valid concern with making a full-res original publicly viewable. I'd gladly post the original versions of my shots, if we had the option to do so. I think it would be a wonderful learning tool, and learning is a big part of the DPC experience.

Why couldn't you upload the original and link a thumbnail from the comments area? |

You can, I have. I think part of the idea of doing it with the ribbon-winners is to store that original outside of their Portfolio space allocation, and make that linking process automatic. |

If that were the case, I would hope that it would be available to everyone, not just the ribbon winners. They aren't necessarily the most interestingly edited of the bunch. |

Personally I don't want everyone to care about how much I've done on a picture. Or sometimes I 'm just not so keen on showing off what I've used. Or maybe it's a picture of a friend, and I've done quite a lot on it (all legal of course and verified), I wouldn't want anyone, especially my friend to see the original. Think of it from people/portrait photographer's point of view. If someone would have wanted to know what I did to m pictures they could just ask.

manditory unedited originals would drastically cut down my number of willing models :)
voluntary unedited originals stored with the submissions is a great idea, though. |

I suppose there would be times when it wouldn't be a good thing to post originals.
If you took a nude picture of yourself, and cropped out all but, say, a tattoo on the top/front of your thigh... and that's what you turned in for a challenge... I can imagine a lot of us wouldn't want the *rest* of that picture being displayed, heh. |

Correct, I don't think the original file size should be available to everyone, just a resized version linked to the entries.
My point being that maybe we all could benefit and learn from seeing the before and afters.
Also, it would force us to be more selective in our framing in the first place. Don't shoot the whole nude, just fill the frame with the tattoo. Choose your subjects better. Shoot in more flattering light using on camera filters or diffused soft lighting....etc, etc.
If you don't want to submit the original, you'll just have to reshoot or sit one out and vote only. Sounds good to me and it would force me/us to think more about each shot. |
