I am in dire need of an external drive, as I'm running with 300MB left on my desktop's drive, and a memory card full of images I can't upload. I am not interested in burning a bazillion cds until I make room, so I need to buy an external drive.
This one is around $200, which is really over my budget, but it's got a lot of space! Enough to last me til I can afford new technology ;)
Lacie External Hard Drive
If anyone has any recommendations for a CHEAPER drive with the same GBs, please let me know! If anyone has this particular drive or knows of it, let me know what you think...I've heard good stuff about Lacie, so I'm not too worried, but you guys are the ultimate panel of judges.

Wow, and here I was getting nervous about having 30gigs left on my 200gig hard drive.....LOL
Looking forward to the responses. I need to start looking into an alternative back-up storage as well.

I got a 320 gig Western Digital External Hard Drive for about $180 a few months back - they might do that again? |

If you want cheaper, look for one without the firewire interface. I got a Lacie 250Gb USB2 only (some Porche model name thing but am not home right now) at Dell a while back for $140 or so. There is NO one-touch backup or anything - I turn it on and copy stuff and it's been great so far. As to the lots of storage, well that will be temporary (mine is now under 70Gb free).
If nobody replies, I can reply with the model when I get home - no idea if that was a special price but either way, I would guess it's less than $200 by a way.
Edit: Ok not the sharpest knife in the draw - I logged onto Dell and got the info from my order history.

Here is a bigger one for cheaper, and another at actual price with no need for filling out rebate forms and waiting. |

I haven't personally used one, but the Lacie drives are supposed to be very good. If budget is a concern, though, look into buying an internal 250gb IDE drive (I recommend this Seagate) and a USB2 3.5" external enclosure. Something like This.
I don't recommend having your only copy be on external drives, though.. wouldn't hurt to get a DVD burner and a 50-pack of blank DVD's (get a name brand!), and you're set for quite a while.
Edit to say: I'd advise you not to cheap out on anything storage-related. Losing data is NOT fun, and I've seen a lot of cheap media get corrupted along with all the files on it. Same goes for inexpensive hard drives. NEVER buy refurbished storage, unless you want a temporary drive for like 6 months before it dies..

I use these drives (precisely the same, same capacity too) as my main backup drives and consider them the most reliable and sturdiest thing there is. The Porsche models are reputed to be just as good except for the enclosure, which is quite thin and makes them a little slimmer too.
I would not recommend anything but the triple interface. Firewire is an absolute must for my purposes (transferring volumes of very large files computer to external, desktop to laptop etc.). If you have FW 800 capability on your Mac, hey... woosh!

We use LaCie drives at work; so far they work. Multiple interfaces are great. Their SilverLining disk formatting software has been good for a long time too.
I think you can buy a 1TB model for $999 ...
Of course, you might want to wait for the new Seagate drives with a new "data-stacking" technology which will supposedly increase data density (per platter) about five-fold. |

You are all so wonderful!
I am in the middle of cooking dinner, writing a paper, watching tv, and playing online...so I will have to check out all these links at some point :)
I am very ready for more space, as I'm really a space hog with all my music and photos. Plus, now that I have this new rebel, I'm realizing just how BIG big files can be!
Thanks again, and I'll prolly come back with more thanks and info and ideas and thanks and stuff ;)
THANKS again again!

I always prefer buying two smaller memory cards to one larger one for the same reason, but people shooting RAW with the new 12.8MP cameras may start needing the larger capacity drives anyway. I'd like one so I could back up three 250GB drives on it : ) |

Si, TB drives are still relatively new. Technology will likely improve eventually. |

If you are looking for a 300Gb internal, a good price would be no more then $150 with rebate. Without rebate it will be a little more. Of course externals are another subject, but you can also buy a cheap external case and put the internal one into it.
Got a 300gb Seagate Sata 16MB Buffer internal from Fry's for $99 after rebate. Should've had my friend buy a second one as I am close to running out myself.

I got 200GB for $100 by buying a 200GB (internal) drive for $60 after rebate and then putting it in a $40 case. Took about 5 minutes.
If you don't have a Mac, don't bother with Firewire, or even if you do the USB only drives cost less.

talmy's method is the right way to do it. USB boxes are cheap and IDE drives are dirt cheap. I used a FireWire box which is probably an overkill, but didn't want to use up usb port, and firewire is faster, even 400Mbs. |

If you have FireWire on the 'pooter, go for a FireWire external, and don't look back. The LaCie you originally referenced is a GREAT option. Very fast, reliable, and 250GB is plent of space, for now ;-)
you can do it cheaper with a USB 2.0-only drive, but USB will be much slower in practice than FireWire. If you don't have FifreWire, cconsider adding an adapter, they are not terribly expensive. You may already have it and not know it, some video cards come with it built in.

I agree with jonr and talmy. I personally have an internal Western Digital hard drive in an external USB enclousure. Newegg.com tends to have pretty good deals on internal drives and external enclosures. They have this drive for $88US and you can find enclosures on there for about $20-$25US. I've put three of these together so far and they work great.
