I got an old picture of my mother that I want to fix and give her at he 60th birthday, it's really badly damaged but I know it can be fixed, but I also know there are people much better at it than me..

the image is about 1" by 2/3" and severely cracked, what I've done so far is I made a copy on a 6x6 Mayima, developed it, made a 8x9 print and scanned it at 600x600dpi.

so I got a BIG file 75MB .PSD

if anyone want's to try to fix it HERE is the file

if you want to see what it's like first HERE is a small version.
and to show that fixing is possible HERE is what I did in 2 hours.

now let's see how good you really are at photoshop :)

if you want to try to fix this image for me please do so, and you can send me the fixed image in my email (can recieve up to 40MB files) dansig@dansig.net
so the image isn't too big, you can resize it to fit A3@300dpi

edit- fixed link

the 3rd link is not working.

I might have a go at it but I'd like to see what you've done first (the 3rd image ;) )

Do you have the original in any other format besides .PSD? I don't use PS but recently have been doing restoration for the Historical Society and would love a different challenge besides old boring architecture from the 1800's.

Tif?
.CR2 raw?

EDIT: Oops...misread the post...guess you don't have it in another format. I have ver. 6 so will work with that but not my editor of choice.

Plus the server where the 75 meg shot is located is slow as all heck...
02/13/2006 06:20:02 PM · #5
The server is slow.

I'm using freedownload manager now though and should have it in about 10 minutes. If you'd like I can mirror the file on a faster server for you.

I fixed the link, the server is on a 12Mbit/s ADSL2+ connection, so upload limit is about 1Mbit/s

I converted the original to .tiff HERE

it's a big file to move around... I will just go eat and come back in a bit. If I see a link I will try it. If not, I got nothing better to do right now. Thanks for the offer.

I went ahead and mirrored the file here:
30MB Tiff

Just let me know when / if you'd like me to take the file down.

thanx, my upload speed isn't that great.. just keep it until the thread dies if you can, then throw it away :)

BTW, I'm retouching it too. It'll be interesting to see all our results. Kinda like a mini challenge ;)

Edit: now that I know the competition is heating up I think it's time to bust out the wacom ;)

How much time do we have? I just started and already know that to do a decent job it will take some time. But breaking down the image to smaller related parts can see the task ahead...I think to do it right would need to do hair, face/neck, clothes separately and do all to a new background.

The one day I need/would like the software on my laptop and I left it at the office...

I need to eat dinner... mighg call it quits for the night.

This is definately a big project that is going to take time but it's good practice.

This is what I have so far, if you don't like it let me know and I'll stop ;)

I played around with it some. I ended up with a pretty soft image so I decided to exaggerate that and go with a very soft hollywood glam-like style. Not a huge fan of it but thought I would post it anyways.

That looks really great Phillip. Excellent work around the eyes, they were difficult for me.

DanSig, let me know if you would like me to save this for you.

Step 2: Final

there is some great work here, but there is no rush, I know a good job takes time, so I decided to ask for help before I got in trouble with the deadline.. my mothers birthday isn't until march 23rd, so there is plenty of time :)

if you like this project please keep workng on the image when you find the time :)

I have decided to give a free membership to the one that has the best result before march 14th that will give you a whole month to find some free time to play with the picture :)

bump to keep the thread alive..

Gringo: you can send me the fixed image in email, dansig@dansig.net just save it as JPEG with maximum quality, do not embed sRGB profile, that should make the image about 8MB, so it's easier to send via email :)

and I hope you photoshoppers keep working on the image.. there is a free membership for the best image :)

Hi Dan,
After the little "bumping heads" in the Free Study thread, my first thought was wondering if anyone's would be good enough. Realized that life is too short to be spiteful, and today is another day. Not in this for a membership either.
So, I'm having a go at it too. So far:

Lemme know if you want me to keep going.

WOW, you guys are good
02/14/2006 06:02:57 PM · #22
I did try and download it last night but had no success.
But I can't improve on BradP's, he's doing it right.
And sounds like right around my time estimate for the job, close to 8 hours.

Bah! I accidentally overwrote my large file with a resized one. Oh well it sounds like I was headed in the wrong direction with it anyway.

Hi BradP

that's awsome job youve done, please continue with the image, with a job that good I could make a BIG print for mom, might even have it printed on canvas and framed.

and you can chose who gets the membership if you win ;)
