I am seriously condering buying a zoom lens within the two following months. I heard excellent reviews for the two zoom lenses manufactured by Nikon and Sigma:
Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D ED
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX APO IF HSM for Nikon
I had a chance to handle for a few moments the sigma lens and I was very delighted, I was also really impressed by the focus, which seems to be ultra fast to me. I am not sure, but I think the focus of the nikon lens is not as fast. On the other hand, I think the nikon lens is better built. I also heard that the sharpness of the nikon lens is excellent. The 2.8 aperture is fine to me, I do not think that I will need a larger aperture.
Any owners who can help me. Thanks

I have been trying to decide between the exact same two lenses. I was just about sold on the Sigma, but I think the Nikon is just a tad sharper at 2.8. I think I am going to go with the Nikon because of its resale value. I bet you could sell the Nikon in a couple of years and get within a $150 of the new price for it, where as the Sigma will probably be $200-300 less than the new price.
Anyway, I am technically still in the decision process, but I'm pretty sure I will go Nikon. I will be watching this thread to see what others have to say. Thanks for getting this one started.

Ok, let's wait for wisdom then.

the 80-200D ED is built like a tank...I haven't had any issues with focus even though it's not AFS...focus is smooth and tracks well.
One thing to consider is that with the sigma, you may be out of luck if you upgrade to a d200 or something newer as sometimes certain things won't work with the sigmas -- no problem, sigma will re-chip your lens for you, but then you're without it for a month or two.
I'm not a Nikon only type person and won't bash other companies just for not being Nikkor, but they do have quite a reputation for quality optics...I'd stick with the Nikon if I were you.

I actually have both. The sigma is covered in dust and doesn't come out much. Although it's focus is a bit faster, the Nikon is by far sharper than the Sigma. I have the Sigma 2.8 20-40 that I purchaced over the Nikon due to cost. It's my work horse for the newspaper and does very well. If you can afford the Nikon I would recomend it for resale and compatibility. Good luck and let us know how you do. |

I also had both lenses. There is just nothing like Nikon glass. |

I don't use the 80-200 but do use the 70-200 VR 2.8 and I love it. The 80-200's have a good rep also but there is more than one model out there. Here is a guy who gives pretty good reviews:

Well, just to give an update, I just bought the Nikon on ebay. Now the long wait for the brown truck. |

From what I hve seen on reviews, the Nikon glass is better, but about $250-300 more in money.
I'd be tempted to save some more and get the nikon glass.
Resale value is almost always more with OEM glass, but then you pay more up front - so the savings has to be factored in there too - say you bought the nikon for $1000, sold it for $850 at some future date. The Sigma you buy for $700 and sell for $500. (based on FM's average price paid for these lenses and Deapee's resale estimates) -
If you had the same $1000 to start with:
Option one (nikon) you have $850 and no lens. (buy for $1000, sell for 850)
Option two you'd have $800 plus the interest on the $300 you didn't spend to begin with. (buy for $700, sell for $500 and still have $300)
If you paid sales tax on both when you bought them, the actual cash out of pocket difference would likely be $25. Not much afterall.
So if you have the extra up front, get the nikon as it is the (slightly) better lens, and this type of lens is one you'll likley use and keep a long time.
