Hi,

I'd like to start shooting BMX, and so far I've heard from a few people that lighting is the biggest part of shooting that type of sports. I guess I'll need at least one, probably more off-camera flashes... Any recommendations for a brand/model? Someone suggested the Sunpak 555 and vivitar 285 - are those good? or are there better options?

Also, I have no idea how to hook everything up - I guess my 350D doesn't have a PC sync cable so I'd have to use a hotshoe-PC adapter, right? Would that work for multiple off-camera flashes?

Forgive the ignorance, but anyway if someone could kind of go over the basics of what I'd need to know about lighting/off-camera flashes I'd be much obliged.

The shooting I'll probably do most would be racing - I asked a guy who's racing photos I'd admired what his lighting setup usually was, and he said he usually had a mix of on-camera flash and a few off-cameras and switched the positions around a lot. So it seems like it's nothing terribly complicated, I just need to know how to hook it all up and what I should buy. And I'd like to shoot street/park as well, and possibly skating.

And, do you think that my camera would be adequate? Or would the lack of a PC sync cable be an issue, or another feature I didn't know about yet? I might be able to get a 35D a few months after they come out..

Thanks

I bought a Sunpak 555 of our local version of Ebay for $120. Super cheap for a flash that has an Index rating of 150 (that's illumination at 150 metres at ISO100). It is awesome. Two nights ago, I was shooting at dusk for Country Life and used it to illuminate a paddock full of sheep and the side of a house 200 metres away. I love this flash!

Cool, thanks. How do you have it connected to your camera? Hotshoe?

Sort of, I have a generic adapter because my camera doesn't have TTL metering, yours does. I have to manually set my flash but you can get a specific Canon shoe that is for the rebel and has the TTL.

The flash is BIG and is mounted on a special bracket that screws into the tripod screw. It is always connected to the camera by a cable, it can't mount directly onto the shoe.

It can also be triggered by a slave if you have the trigger to put on your hotshoe.

I myself have a Sigma EF500 DG super wich is known as a very good flash. It's supposed to be as good as a canon for a lot less money, but, I always had problem with mine getting a correct exposure with it. Even when I boost the flash exposure compensation +1 stops my pics still are underexposed. I think that it just doesn't go very well with the ETTL-II wich is the flash system on the 350D. I guess I wouldn't have this problem if I had bought a Canon 580EX.

I also have a Sigma EF 500 DG Super but have no problems with correct exposure.
