I have a question for anyone who is willing to give me their opinion. :)

In doing a bunch of home decoration (my own home), I plan on framing/hanging a bunch of 4x6 copies of my own photos. However, there are a few on DPC that would go really well with the collage-type thing I'm doing.
My question is this: how do you guys feel about people making copies of pictures that have been submitted here? Most of the ones I want are not available as prints, so I can't buy a print outright. How would you guys handle it? Would you ask the photographer if they mind? Would you offer a payment to them? I'm going to be using them in my living room, so I won't be making anything off of them or claiming credit... I just think that using someone's art for anything at all is a really touchy subject.

Thanks! :)

Side note: Those that I want, that are available as prints, I intend to buy. I don't know if everyone sets their own price on prints here, but I haven't seen any yet that weren't very reasonable. :)

Try right clicking.

I'm not asking how to print them... that's not my worry. I can save/print them out all day long. :) My question is referring to whether or not the photographer should be asked/offered payment/etc.. :)

If you check the user's profile (that you are interested in using their photo) you have the option to send them a private message. That's where I would start.

edit: cause i'm not awake yet...

Does no one on this site have a sense of humor?

i'd definitely drop the photog a line. If you dont offer some payment, be prepared for some people to say no

I have the same question - I will admit that I do "right-clicking", but I save these images on my flash disk for the sole purpose of showing them to my wife. The images I save also serves as a reminder to myself of where I am going with my photography - How much I must still learn. I am not selling the images or taking credit for them - I am enjoying them - Is that not what art is for?

I agree there may be some who would not allow use of their images without payment, but very few. Most would be flattered.

I'm probably like most. If any were mine you'd get my permission to use it, just ask first.

If your / the photographer is uncomfprtanle with this you can always request that they make that specific photo avalible as a print (if they are a member that is)

I have tried the permission thing, but didn't get any replies. I don't see anything wrong with my actions. I will NEVER use somebody elses work as my own - I would feel way to guilty.

not that you'd probably use any of mine or I'd even know if you did but I would still want to be asked first. This would also give the opportunity for the photographer to maybe send you a signed one or maybe one they edited and like better.

When my website was up I was contacted about images being used for backgrounds on church video displays, I was asked how much I would charge and since they were nice enough (and it was for a church display) I told them no charge, just list my name on the image somewhere.

In the long run you would want people to ask for your permission so give them the same degree (or higher) of kindness you'd expect and you won't go wrong.

Actually, two of yours are some of the ones I'm interested in. :) So your comment is actually really helpful. :)
