On the advice of Mario, I recant my statements. I am probably wrong anyhow... Thanks Mario...

Dave, I wouldn't go there if I were you. It's not a pretty place. I know, I've been down this road before, and I won't dare go there again.

Without knowing what the votes are, it's ALSO possible that other people have gone back in and lowered their scores from their initial vote. I know lots of people do that throughout the week -- tweak their votes up and down.
Not saying that IS the case, just that it's a possibility....

I don't understand why 1-3 is considered forbidden. If people weren't supposed to give them, they wouldn't be on the scale. Everyone came down hard on leshii for not recognizing that his interpretation of photography isn't everyone's and that this site is about the average or the popular. If people truly believe that to be the case, then this constant questioning of WHO DARED GIVE ME A ONE shouldn't ever occur and especially not at the rate that it does. |

Kidyin, don't have a problem at all with 1's or 2's. When a comment is left "great image, voted it high" and my score goes down because it was a 1 or two that's what the problem is. People don't have the guts to fess up. They say "great job" and wack your score, that was my comment. Don't like my image, fine, tell me why. A real low score should come with an explanation... Like 3 thumbs down on Sig or a 1 or 2 on NET.

But each challenge, at least one or two people plead for this to happen and it doesn't. People are going to leave low scores and not comments. Not everyone feels obligated to give reasoning. You're fighting a losing battle. |

People came down on leshii for calling photos "crap" instead of saying "sorry, I have a strong personal aversion to this style of photography. I really prefer photos..." or something similarly explanatory instead of incendiary. If you can't see the difference between "I don't like this" and "This is crap" then I think you may be hanging out at the wrong photo site.
I don't care what you "like" or what criteria you use to rate a photo, but there is no reason you can't do so politely and constructively. |

I said nothing about not being able to understand the difference. What I don't understand is why people keep complaining about getting 1's or getting them without an explanation. It just seems like the same post over and over and over again. People ask for for the voter to give an explanation, everyone else says "well, I gave you a 5!" and if the voter finally does offer an explanation, no one cares because everyone else said the photo was a five. But Davenit has sent me a nice message and I understand now that his intention was a bit different. So there's that. |

It's hard to be critical, especially if the aggrieved party has just rallied up some support as you mentioned.
But that's why, if you want to give someone a 1 or 2, it would be so much easier to leave a brief comment/suggestion in the first place. Something like "sorry, this is a 1 for me because ..." and give SOME reason (focus, lighting, subject, cropping, etc.). To me a 1 would have to be so bad as to inspire a visceral reaction which I'd have no problem explaining in about 15 seconds...saving all this forum space for more useful discussion.
But if folks don't want to comment, I am forced to conclude that the people who give my (bad, but never a 1) photo that dreaded score are just idiots, bigots, manipulators or misanthropes...mostly I only notice the "ones" column on the graph on the few occasions it's read zero. |
