That's the title I gave my 'Free Study X' challenge entry. It fell a tad short of where I thought I might end up with this one.

I'm wondering if I failed to convey how outstandingly beautiful the sky was that evening, or if it's just another cliche sunset in the eyes of the viewers.

The trees, for me, added some context and framing to the shot. The really cool thing was I didn't need to boost the color saturation on this at all! ;^)

Wondering...would a portrait orientation have made any difference?

- as submitted for the challenge.
- portrait orientation I considered.

Feedback is, as always, greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Well, since nobody else responded, I guess I will :)

I gave you a six. I liked the colors in the sky and I think you did a good job of showcasing them. I agree with you that the trees helped frame the sky. What kept it from being a higher score for me was the lack of a focal point, something to capture my interest, draw me into the photograph and keep me there. Without that, it just becomes a photo of a pretty sky -- nothing wrong with that, but nothing special to set it above the other entries either.

FWIW, I'm finding that the landscapes that do well here must have a lot of things going for them: superb composition, vivid color/lighting, good contrast, and a stunning view. If you only have some of these, you'll probably end up with an average score.

Hope this helps.

Edit to add:

I do think the portrait crop is more dramatic and might have helped, but my general comments still apply to it.

Thanks for the comments Gary (eqsite).

There were some geese flying around. Too bad I couldn't have gotten a nice 'V' formation in there somehow. ;^)

I agree with your take on needing a focal point/subject.

Much appreciated.

Ok...figured I'm good for at least one bump. ;^)

Um, I prefer the portrait version to the landscape version although both are great shots.

I guess landscapes and skyscapes are very often popular subjects but then I tend to vote on the "here and now" and then review again after I have voted on all entries to make sure there is a sense of balance. Takes time but it is easy to get suckered into the "Oh no! Not another shot!"

I also think landscapes don't often offer much in the way of narrative and if you had have gotten that flight of geese in...

Carl

PS what does bump mean? <--- dumb novice here
