Isn't it funny how this is a scores thread yet we're talking about technicals? LOL!

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled program ;)

David... alas, you and I are in the same challenge ;) Good luck my friend. BTW, I'll be seeing Phillip this Saturday for our GTG ;)

My motion panning is a bit blurry, but it is motion panning. People just seem to look at the blur and say, "Hey, this isn't motion panning."
The blur can be because of numerous things, fx: High ASA setting and dark conditions or object spinning in "non-panning direction".
It is possible to pan a part of the motion and get the effect, ie. The opbject stands out.

I have read all the threads and agree it is apparent many voters do not realize many problems associated with the challenge. Shooting at a very slow shutter speed to achieve the background motion is a requirement of the challenge. If the subject has motion also, then the subject will probably be blurred. Take a bird with flapping wings versus a vechicle with no outside moving parts. I always try to but myself in the photographers shoes before I vote and hope I have enough knowledge of the challenge so I can evaluate the photographers intentions.

i agree with eaglebeck. vehicles are obviously easier to capture than anything else... no moving parts. simple.

everyone's vote will differ on their interpretation. i knew this would be a tough challenge and my score reflects that. But live and learn right?

a certain image that is hard for me to get could be simple to someone with different experience and/or equipment ... i wouldn't factor that in too much in voting

but ultimately, how you vote is up to you

Whether it's easy or not is irrelevant.

I don't mark something down just because I think it's easy. I also won't give a high score for something that I think is hard either.

If the image is presented well, it scores well.

I better respond to my statement about difficulty and quality. Yes I look at quality. Let me explain. I look at two images and I have to select one as a favorite. One is a nice landscape and the other is a surfer on top of a breaking wave. Composition, color, focus, wow are all equal. The landscape scene will always be there, but the surfer is there for only a split second. The photographer has to react imediately versus coming back to retake the landscape scene.

I understand the difficulty behind motion panning, but I had to stop voting on the images. I saw very few "good" images and my voting has been lower in this challenge than any other challenge. A lot of the images are just simply not very good. IMHO, if the subject doesn't lend itself well to motion panning, DON'T USE IT. I see a lot of what looks like experimentation in this challenge. I think the experimentation is a good thing, and really is the point of this site, but I can't bear to dish out any more 3's and 4's.

I have gone back and voted again on all the images I saw. Some did not meet the challenge however were great shots. I could not leave them a 3 or 4 because they may have made a mistake understanding the challenge. I made those at least a 5, as far as those who got really good Motion Panning I boosted them to a 7,8 or 9. I still only have one 10 and trust me that should be the winner.

As contentious as I may have sounded early on in this thread, from talking to some SC members, I will take it with a grain of salt. I stand by all of my comments though and still think there are not enough people on DPC who really know enough about photography and still get to vote. Hopefully they will learn and be able, eventually, to make good judges.

Or I could be completely wrong. LOL.

There are many great photographers here just not enough.

I would have thought 5.5 is too high for a brown ribbon, but when I look at all the high scores posted in here, I'm beginning to wonder....

I doubt that you will even be close to the brown, 5.5 is still a good solid average to above average on this site, I'm still amazed after all the time ive been on this site with some of the low ball scoring people throw around, oh well, the competitor in all of us sometimes rears its ugly head.

Man I don't think Im gunna vote this one, it is just too confusing. I saw no where in the rules about slow shutter speed, or motion blur. In fact there was a challenge called motion blur which stated:
Intentional motion blur is an effect that can be achieved by zooming on a stationary subject, panning a moving subject, using long exposure, etc. Search for subjects that will be enhanced by this treatment.

Now they didn't name this motion blur 2 it was called Motion panning in which was stated: In photography, panning is a technique used to suggest fast motion and bring out foreground from background. Use this panning technique to create your submission. So is it just assumed it has to have a slow shutter speed and blur? Just wondering where that judgement was reached.
