this is my entry for the blue II challenge, which finished up 25th with an average of 6.25. i was pretty satisfied with this result for only my second challenge and i was also happy with the image. my question is, what could i have done to have improved this pic? the comments i received were essentially positive (thanks to all), so they don't give me any clues. any input appreciated.

Heck, I'd make a bunch of suggestions for you, But any one of my ideas would probably drop you down to about 29th place or so. So I'd leave well enough alone.

So, what're trying to say Gringo? That I should just find something more interesting to shoot in future? ...LOL... |

Congratulation Qiki.
The picture is simple but efficient. I would not change much if I were you. Maybe the subject matters a lot but colours and tastes are different depending on people. I gave 7 to your picture. Good job.

Not at all,
The way I see it (in my warped little mind).
There are only 24 pictures on this entire planet that would have scored better than your awesome 6.259.
I am simply not worthy to take someone higher than my average.
I should get some help from you in this challenge.
Congrat's on a nice finish.

thanks guys. i was only joking around when i responded to your initial reply gringo (my self-deprecating australian sense of humour). sorry if the tone of the comments came over wrong.
maybe my pic is ok for what it is. mabye what separates me from a really good photographer is that they would have done something completely 'out of the box' when photographing the same subject and that's what's required to produce really great images. |

No Worries Oiki,
I knew by the big LOL you were just funn'in with me.
I shot what I thought was a unique image and it fell 4 places behind you. (Mine still did a little better that I thought it would in this challenge).
I was surprised to see so many water drops finish in the top %. Don't get me wrong, they are all great images and fit the "Blue" topic well....... but they still sure seem to be well loved by the voters.
I guess we both could have shot water drops.

First never know an aussie with a "self-deprecating humour"... but secondly it was a good shot.
It used the subject well, and got a good mention overall ...
So being a good aussie go drink something with an x or two i nthe name :)

Clickable because we are lazy around here. :D
Anyway, I don't think you could have improved this shot. Only way you could have done better was shoot something else, but then again it might not have came out as good. It was only .25 difference between your image and 10th place so you were pretty much on the money with the shot.

My thoughts exactly Dave. Well put.
If I would have known of something better to shoot, I would have shot it. |

I'm particularly fond of this kind of picture and thought it well done. To do better, you may have to find a subject more in the "DPC" mode, but I'd rather you didn't. I rarely pick the winners - I like the diversity of some of the non-top 10 pictures. Sometimes I think there's a bit too much focus (no pun intended) on trying to ribbon rather than trying to take the best picture of what you want to take pictures of. But that's just one opinion. :-) |

Was one of my faves from the Blue challenge. Suggestions? well you mentioned the reflection in the window, I didn't notice till you pointed it out. Perhaps some levels/curves and/or shadows/highlights setup to reveal the reflection a bit more...
also cropped, selective color to bring out the whites and blues, and a color balance tweak, finally a some noise removal applied, not the image needed it, but it helped to remove some of the dings on the siding, and this image works with extra noise removal since there aren't too many sections with detail or texture.
