Well, we are finally ready to begin!

My friend and I have decided to start a photography club. We looked around at some of the other established clubs and none of them were really what we are looking for so we're taking the plunge. We even have our official name:

PDX Photography Club

Snazzy, isn't it!

We'll be meeting from 5:00-6:30pm on 2/18/06 so if any of you are in the area and would like to come, please feel free!

If you decide to join us could you please PM me and let me know so we can make sure the meeting spot is big enough? Once you send your interest I'll let you know where we'll be meeting - we have two options one more suitable for a smaller group and the other for a larger crowd so its best we have an idea of how many will be coming before we post up the location. It will be in the SE Portland area.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! We're new to this so it'll be a learning experience for everyone I'm sure. :D

Give us an idea of what you see the group looking like?

We envision getting together to discuss various techniques and styles of photography, in a group learning type of environment. However we don't want it to be exactly like taking a class, if for the simple reason that we aren't masters of photography ourselves and we don't want it to be uber-rigid.

We hope to have a theme for each of the informational meetings to set its tone - that will be the subject that we discuss/learn about in-depth. Could be a technique or highlighting a particular known photographer.

We also plan to take time to do critiques on a few images from each person that wants to present them. If people want to treat the meeting theme as a photo assignment or photo challenge that's great, but it won't be a requirement.

We already have an idea of topics right now but we definitely want to make sure we touch on areas that others want to delve into.

The informational meetings are going to be from 5pm-6:30pm on the 1st Saturday of each month.

The second meeting each month is the 3rd Saturday and will be held in the morning. Each of these will be a field trip.

Basically, folks will be responsible for their own transportation and any related fees (such as admission) if they decide to go, but our hope is having a set field trip will give people an opportunity (or excuse) to get out and shoot in an area they may not have chosen on their own, plus give them people to go shoot with.

Often I can't think of somewhere to go or I don't want to go by myself so for others who fall into that way of thinking this might give them a boost. We also don't mind if people decide to bring friends or family members on the field trips, the more the merrier. The only position we have on that is they have to keep an eye on their own kids!

The group is going to be weighted more towards beginner photographers but all skill levels will be welcome and we hope that those with more experience in a particular area will be willing to share their expertise.

The club is open to both film and digital photographers but if photo critiques are wanted, the digital folks will have to bring a print. Or a laptop I suppose. :)

Our first meeting on the 18th is mostly to explain what we'd like to do, introduce ourselves and learn about the folks who want to join, etc. All of the administrative type things.

Whew.

To make a long story short (too late!):

A semi-informal gathering of photo enthusiasts with some structured activities/goals.

One last bump.

Our first meeting is this Saturday. If you'd like to check it out, please send me a PM so I can give you the location! The time has changed slightly, it is now from 4:30p-5:45p due to where we're holding it. I don't want to just throw out the location because we need to know how many are coming so we have enough refreshments, etc.

Have a good night!
