Hi All,
I received the best news in quite a while today - 9 of my photos will go on display at my own exhibition (for 2 weeks) at the graduate student union building at he university where I study!!! Wow, I can't believe this, I am so happy...
...but also so scared...and I have so many questions, I'd really, really appreciate some help and advice...
First off, I need to make a bio and a flyer to publicize the event. On the bio/flyer I'll put on my website details. I've only just made my website, and haven't had any constructive comments about it yet, so I'd be so grateful for anyone willing to take a look - //www.davecorney.com and give comments.
Secondly, what is the usual routine at opening nights of exhibitions if it is just one artist (I hate calling myself that word!)? The most silly questions are flooding my brain - what do I wear (a suit?), do I have to make speeches?
One last question (for now!) - I need to think of a title for my show. The pics which will be on display are at my gallery here: //www.davecorney.com/BRB_photo_exhibition/index.html , if you would like to help me think of a title (please do!). I was thinking of something along the lines of Nature photography, until I noticed 2 pics which aren't nature.
Please help - any words of wisdom from those who have "been there, done that"!! Anything obvious that I shouldn't forget? I don't want to blow this opportunity!
Dave

How do you usually dress? I've exhibited a number of times and a blazer without a tie worked fine for me. My normal dress code is chinos and a knit shirt, so that was one step upscale. It really shouldn't be an issue.
I never had to give a speech.
No ready title comes to mind for that grab-bag of images. Nor do you need one, really. "David Corney ΓΆ€” A Wandering Eye" perhaps? LOL
Congrats on your exhibition-to-be; are you at Cornell?
Robt.

Awsome! yah, I'd calm down a bit and just go with it. Have a good time, and take advantage of the publicity, lol. |

Thanks for the replies, I'm starting to calm down a little now ;-).
Bear - Hmm, I'm really not too sure about that title, I think that people might get the wrong idea, lol. But yes, I'm a Cornell grad student, 1st year toxicology. I just wish I had more free time to enjoy the surroundings!
Any comments on the website or a title?

Web site suggestions...
1-Bag the hi-low entry question to enter, assume Hi. If it is pictures viewers with only low resolution won't be able to appreciate it properly anyway. Most people are hi-res anyway.
2-Add some space above the beggining of the text in the "About" window and fill out the rest of the text.
3-If you can, add a header to your picture pages identifying who you are. There is space available for it. Or make the images larger to use all the screen space.
Your site is simple and to the point. That is good. The main screen is fine.
What to wear depends on the venue. Some places might be black tie, others prefer torn jeans. As an "artist" you will be tolerated no matter what you wear, so wear what feels good. :)
Receptions can be formal or casual. You invite a bunch of your friends to brag and show off your work to then invite other artist "friends" to make them jealous. The venue invites who they want. You stand around telling stories about how you captured the photograph and blush when people notice the quality of your work. You smile and say nice things back when the uninformed make innocuous comments. That is about it. :)
My advice: Have fun with it!
Title suggestion: Camera Captures

Camera Captures is a great idea! That might be the one I"m looking for.
Thanks also for the comments on the website, I'll make a few changes tonight. I was trying for ages to get my name on the actual photo gallery pages, but just couldn't figure it out. I'll try again!

Ummm...David, have you noticed there isn't any snow? =p
About the web site (in addition to stdavidson's remarks with which I whole heartedly agree)...I think the back navigation needs to be clear and evident--once someone views a group of pics they're left at the end with no way back to the home page (except the browser's back button--but one wouldn't think that one click would do it and it does)....The links page takes the viewer out of your site, I would mention it on the page...also, the page is black and the linked-to sites are much brighter--quite a shock after gazing at your images for awhile to be launched into a bright world (don't know what you could do about it that wouldn't ruin the scheme of your site, though)...generally a nice, clean site.
Rules of thumb: make sure your viewers always know where they are (like stdavidson said, banners at the top), make sure your viewers can find their way around and get back to where they started in case they get lost.
Also, I know you want people to be able to contact you, but are you sure you want your phone # "out there"?
What to wear: You have some very good advice in this thread. Be yourself.
What title: I can only think of some really bad ones that play on your name...we don't need to go there.
Relax! Enjoy! Congratulations on your exhibition! |

Would you mind giving me comments on the flyer I've just designed? It has to be B&W. Here it is:

Just a thought, I would remove the word digital from the poster. Let the viewers decide whether they like the images based on the presentation rather than the medium used to capture them.

A couple of thoughts on the flier--(aka what I would do)
Lose the quotes around "An extraordinary...." since you're not attributing the quote. Add a period to the sentece. Center the lines of the paragraphy.
Free Entry - Refreshments
Currently it reads "If you bring light refreshments, we'll let you in for free"
At the Big Red Barn
Until April 5th
"On show" is redundant.
We west-of-the-Atlantic folk put the day after the month.
Otherwise, it's fine. Clean and easy to read.

Thank you! Do you think you'll be able to come along? I suppose it's quite a long drive.
Oh, I also realised I didn't put the time on the poster - its 5 - 7pm.

It's only an hour drive. I do work until 4:30...but still there's a chance. I'd love to be there!
I had another thought, why not put a small portrait on the flier--a little fame for the face. You might be surprised how many people will recognize you and come. |

Any preferences? Personally, I don't like portraits of myself. |

Number 1--perfectly fine portrait. (Gosh, you even look like an honest bloke in that one!)
But do fix that second date--it's still "April 5th" this side of the pond.
By the way, how many photos are you exhibiting?
I forgot, we also don't say "free entry." We say "free admission." (And no, I don't know why--someone was probably trying to make some 18th century event sound fancy and decided to charge "admission")
Oh, and another thing--if you're producing this flier in MS Word, you can right click on the image and change the alignment in regard to text--set it so it's "in front of" text and you'll be able to float it around a bit more freely.

Thanks - you've been so helpful! There will be 9 photos. My only concern is that they will hang them above the windows, so the light probably won't be too good.

You trying to say I don't look honest in real life? lol |

I'd make it "Photographs by..." not "Photography by...", and I'd pay careful attention to having sufficient white space between the chosen image and the text underneath...

"Free Entry - Light Refreshments" indicates to me that everyone will be allowed in for free and given light refreshments.
"Free entry for those who bring light refreshments." is more clear to my mind.
entry/admission, your call. |

Waiting for rollover, took a quick & dirty stab at this in CorelDraw and converted to jpg:
For me, the more symmetrical look works better for a flyer like this, but that's just me, probably...
