Whats the difference between a Hoya r72 and a Hoya rm72? Is there a difference?
I'm trying to find a IR filter for my Canon G3. |

Did you mean RM90? I wasn't aware of an RM72, just the R72. Here is a link to help understand the difference... essentially the RM90 has a cuttof that is deeper into the infrared. This will mean longer exposures and a maore dramatic IR effect.

I think it was a typo; the Hoya infrared filters are all called RM. The 72 stands for the wavelength (lower threshold) at which the filter blocks 50% of incoming light. With this case being 720nm (0% at 680nm). This is the Wratten equivalent of #89B. B+W has an equivalent filter the 092.
I personally like the higher threshold of the Wratten#87c, but Hoya doesn't make one, only the B+W 093.
I would recommend, however starting out with the lower cut off #89b (Hoya RM72) as the resulting images are usually easier to shoot (and process).

The Hoya R and IR series are fast cut-off, where the RM series have a more gradual cutoff. Both series exist, but I think the R72 is the only option in the 720nm range.

RM72 would be the typo. I have the Hoya R72, no M in it. I can't quite get it to work very well with my cameras. Of course that could just be me, actually it probably is just me. I am not very good. :S

not a typo...check it out...I just confused myself...I didn't think they made a rm72...maybe B&H are wrong??

You are right, I pulled out my Hoya, and it states R72. B&H's web site calls them all RM. However, I like the B+W's versions better, because they don't seem to bloom like the Hoyas, better coatings I would assume. |

That is the one I bought. On the filter itself it says R72.

I'm excited to take pictures with it. Which I'm sure it will take me a while before I get it right!

INteresting, they do list an RM72 in a whole series of sizes. Was not aware of that, perhaps it's a new offering?
