Hey, I remember reading a while back about how sick of guitar pictures everyone was, but, I just got my 50mm f/1.8 and I wanted something to shoot, so guess what I had laying around the house?
Anyway, check these out and let me know if you think they suck. You can let me know if you kind of like em too. I can take any kind of punishment, so rip em if they need it. Thanks for your help.
I will gladly exchange a comment for a comment. Let me know which picture of yours you would like my opinion on. Thanks for checking these out.
Cheers,
-jeremy |

Just a technical challenge for you...
Why don't you stop that lens down as far as you can and try to see if you can get the ENTIRE guitar in focus :)
There ARE a lot of shallow DOF guitar pics out there - I've made a bunch, myself, but that "gradually blurring" fretboard is probably what is the most overused effect. Sure, that fast lens is great. I love it. But what if the entire guitar was sharp? Cool, I think, but it requires much more attention to lighting and background issues.
Just a suggestion. These are nice guitars, by the way, and very well lit shots.

Thanks Bernard, that is a good challenge, you're right. I'll see what I can do. Nice pics in your portfolio BTW. I'll be back in a few, hopefully with a good guitar pic with a lot more DOF.
Thanks again. |

I'm never sick of guitar pictures. I've played since I was 8 yrs old (42 now) and it was my main source of income for nearly 20 years. The more guitar pics the better. I especially like the first one. :) |

Thanks Kelly. I'm never sick of looking at them either, but it sounds like there are a lot of pics out there with limited DOF and I guess they could all start to look the same after a while. (not to me and you of course, but to others) |

Nice catch on this one. The "whammy bar" looks like he has a cigarette between his fingers. I thought for a moment that he was playing and holding a cigarette at the same time. ha. |

Ok, per Bernard's challenge, I have worked on one with greater DOF. In fact, I went all the way to f/22 for maximum DOF. I think it might look better somewhere in between, like maybe f/11.
Anyway, here it is...

You're right Nick, it does look too warm. I am having trouble cooling it down without it turning green on me. Here is my new "cooler" version. It still doesn't get me where I want it. Oh well. Thanks for the comment.

f/22 on the third pic - very cool effect (versus shallow DOF).

Mark this is something else. Very very good tryp. The sharpness and detail is amazing. I am a big fan of this ovation body style. I have been tempted a couple of times to buy one, but I just haven't done it. I better save my money for some decent glass. Anyway, the F/22 definately did the trick on that one. Did you try to sell this one to Ovation? They might be interested.

Here is one I did with f/22. Unfortunately, the lighting wasn't the best, so I had to use 0.1s shutter speed, and that ultimately caused a bit of the unwanted blur. But I could see the whole guitar more or less in focus.

Wow, nice shots all!
I'm just setting up my account and snapped this shot real quick to see how uploads worked here. Hope this comes out as a thumbnail and not full sized. It is what it is. A quick snapshot.
EDIT: Thought I'd add this. It's my attempt at a Matheny song. Did it a while back when trying out pc based recording software.
