Yes. Just make sure the steps you take are within the basic rules (I think most are).

thank you!

i would be using channel mixer, if not i can shoot in monochrome, but i would prefer to shoot in colour and sort out later, could not see anything in the rules one way or the other?

one more thing slightly off topic trying to work out when the deadline for submitions, what time zone is this based on??

Channel mixer conversions are OK for basic :-)

Using the Channel Mixer to make your shot a monochrome is fine for Basic Editing, as long as you apply the adjustment to the entire image at once, with the use of any selections/masks.

FWIW, you can convert to a Duotone as well, with the same restrictions -- note that if you use Photoshop's Duotone mode, you have to convert back to RGB mode before saving the final JPEG image.

You can use the Black and White mode in camera and it would be legal. Not the best solution but it will get you a Black and White photo.

Use two adjustment layers, both hue/saturation
The top hue/sat layer is set to 0% saturation
The lower hue/sat layer can be used to change the lightness of the carious color channels giving you much finer control over the tonal range.

Legal for Basic too.

This works best under advanced rules, because the lower hue/sat layer works most efficiently in Color Mixing mode, rather than in Normal Mode.

Channel Mixer is probably the best way to convert to B&W under basic rules.

That's the blending mode on the layers palette. Only normal blending mode is allowed in basic though.
