oups sorry .... being french .. .I took it seriously ... well ... I am new ... so I should have wait before posting ... but at the same time I wanted poeple to 'relax' a little ...

By the way guys .. at least you get comment ... I am at an average of 5 ( a pefect five right now!) and not getting comments ... so I guess this is an average picture .. not risky ... appealing roughly to the eyes ... nothing really bad ... nothing hursting the concept ... nothing special ....

So when you are upset by the comments ... maybe think : 'would I be more upset without comments' ?

I think for my first challenge, I would be happy with that ... I would not like to be 4.99

Good luck to everybody guys , and by the way in french, New potatoes is 'Pommes de terre nouvelles' ;-)

Thanks to lisae for her respect and her very good insight why people whine. And no I don't think that moderators should be disallowed to say "you suck" ;-) She's allowed to vent some steam like all of us.

No, I'm not depressive about having a low score here. Just a bit disappointed. But I'll get over it. I think I already am :-)

I did not whine about not winning or not getting 10s all the time. I whine about people who do not vote for technique or creativity but _only_ for their subjective feelings. As I said... sometimes it feels like people see it as a site for photo album shots and not a photography site where people want to improve our skills.

And of course I'm not only here for the scores (would I read/post in the forum then?). But the scores are an important element and for me a kind of feedback what people think about my photo. Of course I do not automatically dislike my low-scored photos and only like my high-scored photos. It's just a measurement how _other_ people (and taking the numer of people in account one could say the "mainstream") feel about it. My own view often is something else. But I care for other peoples view because it often gives a different view on ones own work.

Heather, you said that a photo of maggots would not get a 10 from youm because you don't like maggots. That's ok for me, but what about a 9 or an 8? If it's technically perfect and a creative execution?

Absolutely!! I commented on each and every photo in the last challenge. I remember specifically saying in a few photos that it wasn't visually appealing to me, but then again, some people don't like puppies or kittens either. Those false teeth really creeped me out, for personal reasons (as I stated in my comment to him) however, I gave him a very high rating for creativity, lighting, etc. I think that everything is appealing to at least someone in the world, (and then there's the occational horse penis) so who am I to judge. By the way, if anyone can point out the point in the horse penis photo, I would really love to hear it, I spent like an hour staring at it trying to find a physical pencil. Please inform me if I'm missing something. I really want to be fair, but dang. PM me if need be, but I'd really like to know. Thank you. I don't want to be unfair just cause "I don't get it".

You're right about judging ... but it is not easy when you ar elearning to judge about technique. For example, I would like people to give advices about the composition of my picture.
I think it is more difficult for an amateur to judge about technique.
Creativity should be easy to evaluate though.

But true, those are more 'philosophical' questions ? What is a 'nice' icture ? A 'good' picture ? A 'perfect' picture ?

There is some movie I like to see again and I would not qualify them as 'very good' and some who are 'very good' that I do not want to see again.

Still when you see the distribution curve of the notes .. usually ... the top 3 is really above the crowd.

So I guess the number of people voting kind of 'average' the results ... and I think that every voting system has its own flaws (see the olympic games).

There is only one 1st, but there is many 'winners'

I, too, agree about judging. I'm new not only to this site, but to photography period. So I keep my comments to a minimum. I don't feel that I am qualified to judge someone's picture on all of the technical aspects that some of you "better" photographers do. So I simply judge on how the pictures effects me. Yes, I look them over several times and sometimes change my vote a little. I comment on pictures that I really like for whatever reason and I like to share that feeling with the photographer because I know that when I take a picture I want other people to tell me if they like it and what it is that they like about it and also, if they don't, what is it that they DON'T like. Ok, sure there are some people who will just comment "it sucks" or "it's ugly" or whatever....those comments I just let go.
But it's funny about the rating system, because I also thought that I'd never get anything better than the 4's, 5's and 6's that I normally get - but then I realized that my 5.8 got me 24th out of 168 in the "Something New" challenge! I was THRILLED! (-:
So, you never know!

Judging creativity can also be subjective... Also, creative vs. unique vs. done well.? (don't know which one is yours, obviously. just interjecting).

This is my first challenge that I submitted for, and I am currently (at the beginning of the week) getting a 5.433. I am rather pleased with that especially since I noticed the mistake that I am getting comments on (but I submitted anyway - I was being lazy, and it was Sunday).

I think if we keep the comments to a composition/technique type mode rather than a technology mode (I can only afford so much camera) that people would be happier. What is JPEG noise anyway? :)

Darn. By the title, I thought this was gonna be a thread about disqualified nude shots. *lol*
I'm really learning a lot about people as well as photography on this site.
My score keeps going down all the time as well, but I entered mainly so that I could participate so it's all good. I like checking the comments and scores. I knew it wasn't a great shot, and I do appreciate constructive comments that just reaffirm my pre-challenge critique of the photo. Learning to recognize what's wrong with your own shot (or what others will think is wrong) is really important.
I'm a little annoyed with people taking the time to make comments like, "Im not sure what pencils have to do with this other than a cheap reason to take a (edit) photo".
I just hope that people don't get hurt by comments that I leave. They're often short and don't contain a lot of fluff to soften them. I do try to point out areas that could be helped. I kinda was under the impression that most people wanted that sort of help here. Even if you think that you have a great shot, there is some value in knowing what other people didn't like about it.

indigo, please keep commenting. don't listen to the complaints about 'bad' comments. as long as you keep it constructive, your comments are valuable. i already got one today that suggested a different angle on my entry, and you know what? i think that was a fabulous idea and i will retake the shot this week. it may very well improve my shot. or not, but then at least i have tried. :)
