We only do that to posts which violate the site TOS. If you prefer we can simply suspend the offender's posting privileges ... much less work than cleaning up specific posts. |
Personally, after recent posts in a thread, I would be happier if offenders WERE suspended for a period rather than the posts edited. Editing just excuses their misdemeanour and hides it while suspension may make them think twice before doing it again. We were asked recently to take care with our posts so as not to offend but this doesn't seem to have got through to some people.

It sometimes bugs me that the threads that have nothing to do with photography take up so much of my front page. Some of them seem to hang around forever. I'd like to see a category for non-photog stuff that was not a rant; and I could turn it off like I can the Rant folder.

Thats the benefit of having the SC monitor threads and move them to rant.
That way those kinds of posts that are rants can be ignored with the appopriate checkmark :-D |

This has been requested already, SC and Admins have apparently not gotten a Round Tuit, or don't like the idea.
Alas, you'll just have to manually select that pesky ignore option on every crap thread that comes up. Or just click on community, and ignore the front page. Then you get all the good stuff (and crap) from the last 24 hours.

A great guideline. I would only ask that the SC stop editing and deleting posts in Rant. |

Actually, site council members impose their personal opinions into grey areas of the TOS. For instance, if I say that in my opinion all followers of a certain religion smell, there's no way that one of you doesn't delete that. Yet is that a personal attack? I don't think so. What is allowed in here is totally skewed by the personal opinions of the individual SC member.
People who are in here for the most part want to be in here.
I have a few simple suggestions for Rant.
Lock out everyone under 18.
Only illegal acts such as menacing, threats, copyright violations etc. should be removed or edited.
Make it clear to members that Rant may contain things they find offensive.

Main Entry: rant
Pronunciation: rant
Function: verb
Etymology: obsolete Dutch ranten, randen
intransitive senses
1 : to talk in a noisy, excited, or declamatory manner
2 : to scold vehemently
transitive senses : to utter in a bombastic declamatory fashion
If the thread does not fall within these parameters.... it's not a rant.
Hope this helps.

No I tried that long ago. On DPC the rant forum has nothing to do with the actual defenition of rant. |
I think that more across the board enforcement would definitely be something worth looking at. I can't for the life of me see how the "bageheads" thread was any more offensive the the "Jokes" thread currently circulating. In fact I can't see how it was offensive at all. Anyone who was offended by that thread really needs to invest in some serious laxative products.

Other than proving you could screw up the thread display for all users at site expense by linking to a piece of site artwork, and demonstrating that you have no clue about what the forum categories mean, what exactly was the point of that thread? If it was supposed to be some form of humor, I'm afraid I didn't get the joke. |

So if the humor is not to your taste it gets trashed. Cool. That was the explanation I was looking for. Apparently others posted to it so at least a small minority share my dry sense of humor including CJ who got to rearranging our little bagheads.
It was started as a light way of stating my dislike for the often random and stupid comments I sometimes get from bagheads during voting.

Yeah, sitting at the computer all day can make a person pretty crabby. I'm going to sound totally idiotic here, but, "I feel for you :))))". Yikes. Mushy stuff is creepy.

The terms of service cover more than just personal attacks. Your example above, for instance, would violate section 4.2(v), which prohibits the posting of material that "(v) does or may denigrate or offend any ethnic, racial, gender, religious or other protected group, through use of language, images, stereotypical depiction or otherwise."

Not me -- I (tried to) read it, found it pointless, and moved on to something else, that's all. |

So then essentially, the PC in DPC stands for politically correct. Who would the other "protected groups" be? |
