Why are certain topics moved to Rant while others wind their way across the board for days? I was told before that it was because they have nothing to do with photography or because they have political content, yet I can show at least half a dozen threads that fall into that group at any given time on the board and nobody says squat.

Are we being selective or do the rules apply across the board?

Just a few.

So has it to do with the OP or is SC being anal or even prejudiced as to what is sent to Rant? I for one would like to know, because I know I start some silly threads from time to time, but that is only because there is an environment for it. Clean up the threads and be fair and I will stop. Otherwise kiss my fat black...

Oh my goodness, look...we've found something else to cry more about.

I say we ban all crybabies.

if they start going south, that's when they get to rant, or if they are a controversial/political topic to begin with. General discussion is our "free for all" category, and rant is for those topics that are beyond "general" and fall into the caustic, political, controversial or otherwise less than 'mainstream' content.

Yeah...like when you call people a dumb-ass and what not...are you actually complaining that thread got moved to rant? Man, I gave you just a bit more credit than I should have ...

I don't understand why people with so many complaints about the site continue to hang around. I have seen you (Nsbca7) make some excellent comments and even be funny on one or two occasions but it is usually a safe bet that if your name is on a thread you were/ are not happy about something. So why do you stay?
02/04/2006 01:39:16 PM · #7
This might help...

Main Entry: rant
Pronunciation: rant
Function: verb
Etymology: obsolete Dutch ranten, randen
intransitive senses
1 : to talk in a noisy, excited, or declamatory manner
2 : to scold vehemently
transitive senses : to utter in a bombastic declamatory fashion

If the thread does not fall within these parameters.... it's not a rant.

Hope this helps.

My apologies, the post from Wavelength below was me, didn't switch users.

Good question Briz & Wave... :)

I think wavelength has a valid point...

quit yer crying and man up nsbca...if you're not happy, or if you're 'too good for the community' then move on.

Do you see how this thread went off topic? Its a great example of something that started out almost ok in the normal forums but quickly went south because of how the OP has reacted and how some of the follow up posts have gone.

I hope that answers your question. Please try to post useful things, even if not photography related.

And how would you classify any of the threads I listed below as "useful" on a photography website?
02/04/2006 01:54:56 PM · #13
There is a bit of leeway given to non-photography related threads because they are "fun" or otherwise interesting and create a sense of community.

I don't see the need to justify the classification system. Caustic = in rant. Its that easy. Related to photography has VERY little to do with it because general discussion is a category saved for non-photo related discussions that are not caustic. I can't be any clearer than that.

Possibly by the fact that the participants (site members) are actively exchanging information they find interesting and useful without calling each other names or complaining about how the site or the country is run.

You opened that thread in Website Suggestions. Surely you don't believe the thread was relevant to that folder?

That's why the thread was moved, and Rant was chosen as the destination because the thread had generated a very high number of Report Posts.

Yes I do believe it was relevant.

So is that the qualifier?

I know my wife posted as me accidentally earlier, but I'll throw my 2 cents in.

You are not married to this site ( even that doesn't mean much to most people these days). You can, like an annoying or troublesome girlfriend, leave it.

Not that I want you to, but watching you over the past month or so, I have to figure either you have decidedly masochistic nature, or you just like to annoy other people.

It seems that you have a good pro career on your own, and don't really need the approval of this site or anyone on it to see your own personal value as a photographer.

It's simple, you came into this relationship (allegorically speaking) seeking to get something out of this site. Instead, what you should do in this relationship is seek to add to it. What you are doing now is tearing down and degrading both yourself and the site. If the site will not change, you must, for your own sake, either change yourself or leave.

I sincerely hope that you do stay, and that you do start to look at ways you can contribute here in a more meaningful and uplifting way.

regards, Steve.

No I tried that long ago. On DPC the rant forum has nothing to do with the actual defenition of rant.

It shows how much I read the Rant threads this was the first I looked at today. I think it is like a Movie Rating. Rant=PG. No one will be distressed reading something that makes them feel uneasy, like differing points of view seem to do. I think it makes for an interesting site, this below the surface, underbelly thread where all the denizens dwell. :)

Perhaps I'm missing something then. Since neither your original post, nor any follow-ups, included a website suggestion, what was the relevance of the post to that folder?

A great guideline. I would only ask that the SC stop editing and deleting posts in Rant.

We only do that to posts which violate the site TOS. If you prefer we can simply suspend the offender's posting privileges ... much less work than cleaning up specific posts.
