I just finished with a major glass upgrade - and have some great news.
I let the guys at the camera store, Pixels in Sandy, Utah (shout out to my Pixels peeps) talk me into a Tamron lens in my Nikkor bag of tricks.
I got the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 for about $400 (can't remember exact number for sure right now) and I'm amazed at how optically sound this little lens is. I find it's my main workhorse for studio work, and the macro is continuous focus (no switches to flip to get into macro mode).
It's nearly as sharp as my 12-24 that I paid more than twice as much for.
So here's my recommendation for this terrific, fast, and super sharp little lens.
On a side note: All my new lenses were purchased with money I made from one local client and macro stock sales - three photos sold bought my 12-24 and my Tamron. Three sales on the micro sites I'd not even have enough for a cup of coffee.

I purchased the same lens for my canon. It arrived yesterday and I took a shot or two just to see how fast and sharp the lens was, wow! Just looking at the few pictures I took I am amazed. They were photo's of tree's, cars, buildings, etc. nothing special but I could see a big improvement in lens. I can't wait to go on a shoot with it.
Congratulations on your new lens.

That lens is the official mascot of the DPC SLR owners.

This has me wanting to start a new thread. (which I will). I've never considered anything but L glass, but perhaps I'm being a bit elitist there. Maybe we could compile a list of third party lenses which are nearly as good for much less money. I think some lenses come closer than others but don't know which.

That Tamron would certainly be among them. The Sigma 100-300 f/4 is rumored to be near L quality, too.
