A friend wants to buy a relatively small point and shoot for £200 to take with her when she goes hill walking / on holiday. Can anyone suggest something useful. Have you got one of these?

I had a small compact Panasonic camera before the one I have now, it was great. I would highly recommend Panasonic P&S cameras, most if not all, of them come with IS built in now too and a few of them have very nice Leica lenses.

If she wants more zoom, tell her to check for the now discontinued Panasonic FZ20. It's a really great camera. She will have to look for one second hand. It's a bit too large to fit in a pocket, but might be just fine if she brings a moderately sized purse.

Looking for something new will probably restrict her to pocketable cams. Panasonic does good work and I personally like the current 5MP Canon A610 (I'm pretty sure that's the one) that has the flip-and-twist LCD screen.

I was really happpy with my Sony DSC-P92. If that's not too large, it's a great camera series.

The P&S cameras in the price range are very good across the board. Her decision will be mostly based on features, size, and convenience. Have her go to a local camera store and look at the Coolpix, Powershot, and Kodak Easyshare options and talk to the sales staff. Too many options to list here. People will mostly just tell you what they have owned (which is good but really won't narrow things down).

Be careful listening to sales staff though. My grandmother did this and picked up a camera that cost almost the same as the camera I recommended to my father, but it has virtually no features.

It pays to be educated.

Most camera salesmen that I talk to are pretty well educated if they work in a specialty or higher end store that also deals in DSLR's.

The caveat here is against sales people in stores like London Drugs or similar more generalized types of stores that purport to be knowledgeable technology specialists.

Personally, I've handled most types of cameras out there, and I've not felt really strongly towards the lower end coolpix cams. I generally recommend the Panasonic/Canon, followed by Sony/Kodak. As with most things, I find Nikon cams generally deliver slightly less versatility and functionality for their price. Canon is getting a bit lazy on this end too and they really have to watch their tail on the Panasonics.

Make sure that you have her read about any camera on DPReview before buying if she cares about her pictures, and I also usually recommend that people go to the store twice rather than buying a camera on the first trip out.

Remember, more megapixels isn't always better.

The canon s45 is a good one, small and sturdy. I picked that one out for my mom when she was looking

Maybe something like the Olumpus Stylus / mju series (600, 800, 710 or 810). They are to some extent weatherproof, always useful for outdoor activities. Haven't tried them yet, but I am interested in the new 810 with antishake, weatherproofing and a 3mp (instead of the normal 8) ISO 3200 mode. No manual modes, that's a bit of a downside. Let's see what else PMA brings.

The Nikon Coolpix range are superb cameras (the 5600 game great results for me), a friend of mine also has a nice Canon P&S camera, although I forget which model.
