After playing with the Rebel XT for a couple of hours now I have a few questions that pertain to DSLRs (seeing that this is my first one). I have read about eyepiece magnification and am not sure about what it is. I have a pretty good guess after playing around with the camera. When I look through the eyepiece and compose my shot, I notice that the picture I get is slightly more cropped than what I saw through the eyepiece. So, is that what the eyepiece magnification is? Is there any difference between wide and tele, or is it a striaght multiplier through the whole zoom range? Any tips? Thank you!

I actually thought that the image I got was slightly larger than what I would see thru the viewfinder on my 350xt, and my buddy agrees that the image is larger than the viewfinder on his 20d. Viewfinder magnification though means actual magnification thru the viewfinder of the entire image to make it easier to see. What you are talking about is more like a crop factor for the viewfinder and not the magnification. Hope that helps.

The image i get on my 300D is larger than what i see through the viewfinder as well.

I have no clue what magnification is, as nothing is magnified as far as i can tell. Accuracy maybe, or coverage would be a better term.

The specs for your camera will say that what you see through the viewfinder is only 90+% of the picture.

No, the magnification is only on the part that you see in the camera. The image in the viewfinder can be magnified without cropping. The reason there is more picture than what it looks like in the viewfinder is because the camera is less than 100% coverage.
