oh, do i stink!!! and i have 3 more assignments today and i don't have time to shower. oh, well.

anyways, the call came in from the Times-Dispatch, wanting to know if i was available. without hesitation, i replied, "I'm on it!!"

don't know what they'll use, but these are what i gave them
slideshow

as it was new construction, no one lost anything (except the insurance companies). no one was injured. just a big mess...

I really like your shot with the rainbow over the fire. Cool shots.

Nice shots, Skip! I like the one with the rainbow, hehe. :-D

Great pixs, the rainbow really adds to it, a promise of no more fires???
I'm sure you do more work to the pics than their full time staff phogs. good job.

thanks, don, but not exactly. yes, i do work hard, but the Richmond Times-Dispatch has some of the most incredible photographic talent i've ever seen. check out their galleries here, and i'm sure you'll agree.

amazing how our business turns tragedy into beauty.

great work, skip.

which leads me to a question: the paper i shoot for has exclusive rights to my photos, i don't even post them here. does the paper mind you doing that?

The second picture (with ladders and smoke) is awesome. My favourite by far.

In lieu of a shower, did you ask one of the firefighter to hose you down?

lol

thanks, jeff. to answer your question, i am very, very lucky in that the only works-for-hire contract i have is with the AP; all the rest of my contracts are 'publishing agreements' where i give the company who gives me the assignment a single-use license to an image. this means that i retain the full copyright, the sole reprint rights, and the right to additional compensation if they choose to run an image again. there are a handful of exceptions where i've had to give up the 'sole reprint rights', but the situations were justifiable.

the other nice thing is that it means that i can sell images shot for one publication to other publications. if i am reselling the previously published images, i make that clear to the purchaser. i also don't resell anything until after the original contractor has had a chance to publish the images i provided them. and, if someone ever said they wanted images exclusively, i would honor that--as long as they were paying for exclusive use.

thanks for all the feedback. i'll be sure to post up a clipping of whatever they decide to run.

update...

oh, well...as it turns out, the paper's best photographer lives in the area, and unbeknownst to the paper, he was already there. at least, even though they went with his shots, i still get paid.

skiprow, your shots are impressive from the fire. I always click on people's PJ stuff, and seriously, you seem to have both caught the scene in its drama and remembered not to lose your cool and stay focused...impressive man...they should have gone with your shots.

Can you still submit them elsewhere? Probably not as it wouldn't make it until tomorrows paper...shame.

thanks, dp! (and alex)

actually, a whole series of them will be running in one of the local weeklies i shoot for. i have these and a few others that profile some of the local firemen, as well. one advantage of the weeklies is that they can get more into the feature of a story as opposed to having to deal with the immediate news issues.

here's a link to what the RTD did run link. as it turns out, we were pretty much on opposite sides of the structure.

also, unless i had something that was unbelievably spectacular, they would never run a stringer's shot ahead of one of their staff shooters. that's just the way it is.

Ditto. I like the contrast of it all...a pretty rainbow vs. all the destruction.

Terrific shots, btw!

Hey Skip-
Your photos look great. My favorite one is the shot of the ladder amoungst the haze, but the rainbow one is great too.

Honestly, I like your shots much better than the one published. Nice work.
