Another thread prompted me to look at which comments I made were being marked as useful - I was quite surprised! My own philosophy is to mark almost everything as useful. If they've made the effort to comment, I have to consider it important.
How do you feel and mark comments?

I tend to mark them all as useful - unless they're downright mean hearted.

I figure it this way - I don't have to agree with the comment for it to be helpful to me. The comment might be totally opposite to what I feel, but the usefulness of it is that it lets me see how others are viewing my image. I can take that info, and use it to grow by. I can take that info, and use it to mold my work closer to their liking - or to work harder on getting the viewer to understand the image through my eyes. Either way - I am learning something, and finding a way to apply it.

I mark 99% helpful. What we don't want here is to discourage people from commenting.

It seems we are in agreement with Shutterpug, but if I look at my stats there are many users with other ideas.

I agree completely. I mark every comment received as helpful, even in cases I think the opposite to the commenter, because is useful to see others opinions. For me every time I check my images fist I look forward new comments and then for the average vote. It make me more happy have a new comment. Well, that is maybe because my average is bad, LOL.

I mark most of the comments I received useful. I love receiving comments, even if it's only a few words, highlighting something I have done well or wrong. I very rarely refuse a comment, 1% of them or so...

I mark a comment as useful if they have given reasons as to why it's good or bad. If there are no reasons and it just says 'Great pic' or 'Don't like it' then it doesn't get a tick.

Almost any comment offered can be regarded as valuable because it means that the viewer was motivated to talk to your photo - and that in itself is a piece of information for you. I think saying a photo is *great* is a HUGE piece of information for the photographer.

People who keep a very narrow idea of what comments are useful (e.g. I don't like comments on content, I only like technique comments, etc.) should keep in mind the high number of novices on this site. Not everyone has the experience to recognize your adept manipulation of field depth.

Every comment you get represents a donation of time and consideration. In any workshop environment, this behavior should be encouraged.

I just got a comment that said "Yawn"....no way I am marking that helpful! If they had said why they though it was "yawn-worthy" maybe I would mark it helpful. I mark almost all of my comments helpful, very few don't get ticked.
