Next wildlife challenge please don't stress the non-domesticated aspect of the subject matter. About half of the top twenty were penned animals shot in controlled environments, a location that some people felt was not allowed. Those who thought the only legitimate shots required them to track down a wild animal, which was of course free to run away from the guy with the camera as soon as they spoted him, were at a huge disadvantage when compared to those who thought it was OK to shoot penned animals. If enough people feel a rule ought to be ignored, then the rule ought to be done away with. The description should allow shooting anything, anywhere, as long as the shot looks wild.

I second that except I think "half of the top twenty" is a bit of an exageration. I will say that one in the top three was definatly shot in an enclosure.

It would be interesting to see how many of the top twenty were real wildlife shots, are the photographers willing to share?

I voted the top six 10s believing they were excellent wildlife shots just interested in seeing if I was right, this is not a witch hunt.

Guilty as charged, maybe six of the twenty, probably.

Holy crap! That looked more like a press conference than a wildlife shoot! LOL Congrats on 4th - a great shot, even if it was a fake bird hanging on a string. ;-)

Congrats, Nick, on a fine capture of a truly wild bird - even if few will appreciate the trouble you went through. But then that is a frequent occurrence in most all challenges here - simplicity and illusion often win out.

It is a water sking park. No fences, no zookeepers, the critters fend for themselves, just across the bucolic 8 lane freeway from the San Francisco bay mud flats. Besides egrets are domesticated about as often as squirrles. My point is that we ought to get rid of the distiction of where the shot is taken. We can ask for a look or effect and quit putting limits on where the shot is taken.

Someone who traveled to Africa to shoot some wild Mountain Gorillas or trudged through the jungles of Burma to catch a Bengal Tiger stalking it's prey might view your entry as perpetrating an indelible fraud (my favorite phrase now). It's all relative and this is just one of those issues that comes down to how you interpret words and descriptions. It's not all that important to me and I can see points on all sides. As always, the voters have the final say, and they have spoken. :)

By the way, I gave your bird a 7, but had I known... ;-P
