Dumb question I'm sure, but...
I'm just about to purchase some PP software (probably Corel Paint Shop Pro X) and am a little unsure about the implications of needing to register the software. Does the need to register software mean that you can only install it on 1 computer? What happens if I put on my desktop and notebook? What happens if I need to reinstall after a computer crash?

Some programs will let you install on both a desktop and a laptop, but others won't - you'll need to look at the license agreement for whichever package you use to determine that. Some software developers will let you do this if you are only going to use it on one computer at a time (i.e. treating it like a book that can't be read by two people simultaneously, but they can take turns reading chapters).
If your computer crashes, or you upgrade your operating system, or if you replace your hard disk, there is no problem with reinstalling the program on the computer again.
If your software is "OEM" (cheaper software, bundled with a computer) then you can't move it from one computer to another. If your software is normal not OEM (i.e. anything you pay normal retail for, or download from the Internet) then you are allowed to remove it from one computer and install it on a completely different computer.

PSP doesn't tie itself to one computer upon registration. You're only bound the the honor system to not violate the license agreement.
If you try to use a key that is widely distributed, you may have problems, I dunno, never tried it.
But, if you're worried about installing it, and upgrading your computer/hard drive/etc.. later, you shouldn't have any problems re-installing on the new system/ |
