Having read the raves in another forum regarding the Tokina 12-24, and having asked what is the advantage of the added 5mm, I am left wondering why would someone get the Tamron as their wide angle lens..I get the specs part, but couldn't find an answer to what is lost in geting a wider angle...
anyone use the Tamron 17-35 as their wide angle lens? what are its advantages?
I am not about to go and buy a bunch on lenses, so basically am looking for a decent lens to pair up with the Tamron 28-75... |

You're prolly better off with the 12-24, or the Canon 10-22. You won't overlap with the 28-75, and 17mm is really not that wide on a 1.6-crop cam (27mm equivalent FoV). The difference between 12mm and 17mm is HUGE. Specifically, 17mm gives ou a horizontal coverage of 67°, whereas 12mm gives 86°, and 10mm gives a whopping 97°.

I have a 1.3x and a 1.6x cropped sensor. So having the Tokina meant that I could only use it on one of the bodies. I used to have the Tokina 12-24 as well and still have the Tamron. The Tamron is noticalby sharper when I'm working on the RAW images. If I only had a cropped sensor lens, then 17-35mm would not be wide enough and hence I would go with an ultrawide like a Canon 10-22 or a Sigma 10-20 and then a zoom in the 24/28-70 ish range like a Canon 24-70, Sigma 24-70, Sigma 24-60, or a Tamron 28-75. Hence skipping the 17-35mm range lenses.
Good luck.

oh and sigma makes a 12-24mm that will cover full frame which is nice if you ever upgrade. |
