How do you travel with your camera and lenses during the summer? What I'm wondering is this: let's say for example that we decide to take a trip out west, and we fly. Ok. I'd like to take my camera and 5-6 lenses with me in my large bag (one with rollers that will fit under the seat on the plane). But....when we're out sight seeing I obviously don't want to lug around 30 lbs worth of equipment! Since you can't always lock your equipment in a safe in a motel room, is it ok to store the lenses (or even the camera sometimes) in the trunk of your car? I'm wondering if they'd be ok or if they would get too hot and would be damaged. Is it better to just select 2-3 lenses and only take those (& have to carry them all around ALL of the time) and just hope you don't need any of the other ones?

Here are the lenses that I have. I can think of different instances where I'd love to use each one, but I don't want to lug them all around all of the time.

Canon 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO HSM
Canon 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro
Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM (the new one)
Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM

I wouldn't leave anything in the trunk. Mainly because of possible theft and high temperature. If your bag is on rollers then I would say it's a non-issue. Roll away.

Also, you seem to have some overlap so you shouldn't need to take everything.

10-22
60 or 17-85
70-200

three lenses with only small gaps in focal length unless you take the 17-85 instead of the 60.

How often do you use the 70-300 past 200mm? Remember, with 8 megapixels you do have some crop room.

I don't know. I haven't had it very long. It IS much lighter and smaller than the Sigma 70-200 so it would be easier to carry but it's f/4-5.6 whereas the 70-200 is f/2.8. But then the 70-300 does have the IS. If I took everything, I'd take the bag with the rollers (but also bring the smaller bag for outings), but if I only took a couple of lenses, then I would just take my regular bag.

I guess I was mainly wondering if the temperature in the trunk would damage the lenses. If so, then I would HAVE to only select a couple to bring. I just know that I'll be somewhere and wish I had one of the lenses that I left at home! lol

There's the question to try and answer before you travel.

Another question, how ofter do you use the 70-200 at 2.8? Would you be taking any shots that need 2.8 while on vacation? Think of what you normally use 2.8 for. I know you don't know for sure but you probably won't change your habits just because you're on vacation.

Murphy's Law mandates that the one lenss you don't take is the first one you will absolutely, totally have to have on the first day out shooting. Take them all, that's why you have them all. :)

Right now I'm mostly using the 70-200 for my daughter's swimmeets. So, if we're just sightseeing, I was thinking maybe the 10-22 for scenery, either the 17-85 or the 70-300 and then maybe the 85mm if I need something for inside since it's f/1.8. So, the temps in the trunk would definitely hurt the lenses, huh?

I'd bring the 10-22 and the 70-200
