Ok for some reason my d70 is now naming my pictures DSC_003 and so on. It has nerver placed a DSC_ in front of the numbers before. Now when I go to copy the pictures into my photo folder on my computer I am getting an error message that says "The computer cannot detect the scanner or camera. Please make sure the device is turned on and properly connected to your computer". Which it is. Has anyone had this problem before?

two problems:
i believe this is a setting - you can change the preface "dsc_" to anything you like - if the camera has recenty been reset it likely reverted to dsc_
(my d100 has always had dsc_ , d200 has _dsc_ )

the computer problem is likely the camera has changed from ptp mode to mass storage mode or vicevera

I checked the camera usb mode, it is still it ptp mode. I believe my d70 used to name the photos, picture 01 picture 02 and so on. I didnt reset it latley. Although my wife has been messing with it. Maybe she changed something.

which OS are you pluging into ? W2k ? XP?

i tend to keep my cameras on Mass Storage so both Windows & Linux can find them - PTP is more of a XP thing .. I know nothing about Mac's..

DSC is the default, so is it possible she reset it to defaults? Have you noticed any other custom settings reverting back to the defaults?

I think it may have something to do with my computer. I can copy the files if I drag and drop them. But I can not use the automated feature windows xp has built in.

For the naming problem: As far as I know, DSC_xxx.jpg is what the camera names the photos. If you copy them to the computer using a card reader or the USB cable and Windows software that is what you'll get. However, if you use picture project or other Nikon software, you get the option of renaming them as they download. It's somewhere in the advanced settings of the transfer window.

For the computer problem: I'm not sure what the problem is there...maybe something to do with the way the computer is recognizing the camera or maybe the drivers need an update. Regardless, I highly recommend getting a card reader. You can get them dirt cheap and they are much faster than transfering directly from the camera. Plus they save your battery.

I do have a card reader. I geuss I left that part out. Sorry. Yeah, once I take the card out of the camera an place it in the card reader, a little box pops up that says "what would you like to do 1 copy pictures to computer/ view as slideshow/ open file/ and so on". Once I clik on copy pictures to computer I get an error. Its kind of strange.

I think you have "normally" downloaded your pictures from the camera with Windows XP's Wizard. It tends to name pictures "name xx.jpg" where name is something you enter into a text field and xx is an index number starting from 01.

Now it has (for unknown reason, XP power!) stopped working, so you have downloaded images "straight" from the camera. That's what I always do anyway.

Yeah, your right. Thanks a bunch for the tips.
