I've asked more questions in the last 2 days than most people do in a year, but like I said I'm about to order a lot of gear.

Last month Prof Fate suggested the Al Jacobs Black Box as an external power source for my Canon 550EX. I have narrowed it down to either that or the Canon CP-E3 that takes 8-AA cell magazines.

Does anyone own or use the black box? Is it complicated to use with the 550EX? I'm not exactly sure how the fake AA cell power adaptor works (do I have to take the battery door off?) and what all this mumbo jumbo about charging means... does it not charge like a regular battery? Thanks!

Don't know a thing about the black box - hopefully it works out well!

I own 2 of them for use with a Nikon SB800. They are absolutely great, far better than any AA setup, in my opinion. The cable is no big deal, works great. Yes, you do have to remove the door.
The thing will power 1000 full power flash actuations. That's about ten times what a set of AAs will do. And the juice is very reliable. The charger is also very simple and powerful.
