I don't know if anyone from South Africa has already discussed this here, but it's pretty big news at the moment:

| That is so sad!!! It doesn't sound like the guy who started the fire is out of the woods just yet. I guess February 10 will be telling about that. I know he's probably not a bad person, but was just too pre-occupied to make sure his cigarrette was out when he tossed it. . .but none of that will fill the hole in the hearts of the people who lost their loved one. |

As I don't know the guy I can't comment about what kind of person he is, but I certainly know people who deliberately throw burning cigarettes down without any though about extinguishing them. One even does it from the balcony of his own apartment into the garden below.
Often I see burning cigarettes lying around and I make it a habit to stand on them. Sometimes I get the feeling people think I am crazy for doing so. After this, maybe they will think differently. Somehow I doubt it though.

I know in Oklahoma, several of the fires that have plagued this region have been started by cigarettes. The governor even held a press conference and said if you see someone throwing cigarette butts to call the police immediately. They have arrested many people for breaking the burn ban. The first to be prosecuted... a man who was caught burning his trash in a rural area where there is not "trash man". His fire did not get out of control, but because of the burn ban, the man was given a year in county jail.
