I am looking at buying a canon 350d 8mp.
Do you think it would be safe to buy from ebay?? I have never bought from ebay but have being looking and there are alot of great prices for new/near new cameras are they normally safe?

(was looking at the 20d but decided for what I need 350d would be ok and I have access to a 20d anyway)

its safe as long as you pay through ebay (paypal)... its also good to see the sellers ratings.

I bought my 20d through ebay as well as Sigma 120-300mm and 24-70mm. The lenses have been fine but the camera had to be returned for repair as it became faulty after 2 months. It had been imported from HK and I was without it for 12 weeks. From now on I will always buy from somebody I can complain to face to face.

Did it cost to repair because this is the type of thing I am thinking about I dont want to buy then have to pay again for repair.

Ebay is for the most part very safe to buy from. But as someone above said pay close attention to sellers rating and read all the feedback from previous buyers. I have made several purchases over ebay and even made a few sales. Never had a problem. But problems can come up. Not always the fault of seller or ebay but USPS UPS FED EX etc...

It is same as safe sex... if you know the other party very well, go for it. If not, ask around (feedback) and use protection (see buyer protection when using paypal etc.)

I have bought lots of stuff on e-bay (two motor vehicles and many other smaller things). Check feedback before entering into a purchase and ask questions before making a bid if you have any.

I think that most of the cameras that they sell cheap are "grey market" in other words dont have USA warranties, they are imported so be careful. If you dont mind this then you might find that B&H and KEH in New York will have good prices on "grey" cameras too and they are more reputable.

Good luck

I just bought my 20d from a private seller on ebay, I first checked that the seller would accept paypal as a payment option, a little safer that way, I checked the sellers feedback and also the particular camera I bought came with the original blank registration card and the sale reciept from B&H photo. With all of the above I had no problem buying from ebay.

I have bought quite a few things from ebay and always check sellers feedback, that at least gives you an idea of their reputation and shows a little about the past transactions they have had. There are many "camera stores" on ebay too, but check the feedback, even if the rating is a 99.3. If they have 1500 auctions a week they can still have lots of negative feedback. When I searched for a camera there I found some of them that had feedback in the high 90s, like 98 or 99, but they had received 15 negative and 25 neutral in the last month and hundreds in the last 6 months, and reading through many were for not receiving items and having to get paypal to settle it. So just be careful. Also there are a few that have 1 day listings and say to write them for the buy it now price and they will end the auction early. Don't fall for it, that is against ebay (if you notice they always want you to send the email to a different one then their actual ebay listed one) and they will want you to send money order to them. Scam!!

I do not like to send money orders or checks, although I have done that for less expensive items and not had a problem (of course after checking their feedback) But a 20d cost way more then I am willing to take a risk about, so research the seller carefully and know exactly what you are buying (read the description) I have seen what I thought were good deals until I read the entire description and found something wrong (usually a chip or crack on the glassware items) listed.

rofl, i'm so stealing that next time someone asks me about ebay

bought my XT on ebay as well, never had any problems. yep, only use paypal and watch for scams such as "my email isn't working email me here: stolenaccount@phisher.br" or "BRAND NEW MINT IN BOX!" when the photo shows used equipment on a table, always hate that

Ebay can be a great place to buy things. But it can also be a minefield for the uninitiated. Making a large purchase such as a DSLR as your first experience with Ebay is risky. I would reccommend that you get someone you can trust and who is experienced in the ways of Ebay to check out the deal before you finalize it.

Stick with the big names. I even call them first to confirm price and to ensure it's in-stock. No number then no order. If you use price check and stay with the big boys you should be ok.
