I got the domain name for my business, which consists of just lonely me. The domain name is the same as my Ontario registered business name, dot-com.

I've never done any advertising, always get clients by word of mouth, and I've actually been turning down new clients for the last three years as I'm full up. The web site has never been any good to me at all, except for the email addy.

I got a call from a small group who wants it. They say they will maintain my email addy for me, and could build me in as the Canadian portion of their business, which I'm not really interested in.

I said I'd think about it over night & asked him to give me a ring back tomorrow. I guess I'd have to get some sort of legal agreement set up to guarantee my email & link. Blah! As a small software consulting firm just starting up with a few guys, they don't have a lot of money, but he also said they aren't looking for charity.

What might be a fair price?

I'm still even wondering if I want to let it go, but all I really need is a link to my email addy. I wonder.

Sign me,
Confused in Slippyland.

It would help if you told us what the domain name is, some are more obviously worth more than others. If you own //www.microsoft.com, it's worth a mint. //Www.slippy.com? Less obvious....

Hey, if you don't use it, might as well make a couple $ twards your next tripod or microfiber, lol. As for price, i have no idea, but I'd go for it. And I'd also take the Canadian business link... even if your not accepting clients now, you never know what the future hoilds. And it can't hurt to have some American publicity, lol.
Good luck Slippy

If you sell it just be sure you get in writting what it will be used for. I had a graphics group and I also had a site where the members of the group offered art and photos for webdesigners. I got tired of running it and turned the group over to someone else and shut down the art/photo site. I was approached by a guy about buying the domain which was Stockstash.com He said his brother was in a band named Stockstash which I thought was strange but there's many bands stranger than that. He said he and his sister wanted to buy him the domain and surprise him for his birthday. We emailed back and forth for a couple of weeks and I felt very comfortable about what he was telling me. So I sold him the domain for $400.00. All he actually wanted it for was to forward to an online casino. My art/photo site had about 14,000 registered users and links all over the web, so they got a good deal for $400.00. I was so pissed not only at him but also myself.

Totally depends on the laws there. Here if you do that they call it cyber squating, depending on the company they might be able to eminant domain it away. Your left with nothing thanks to the lawyers and deep pockets. I don't know if thats the same laws there though. I would still try to get a good money for it, whats the worst that can happen?

What, and let all you DPC psychos know my true identity!?!? How could I sleep at night knowing that Art Roflmao or some equally twisted freak might be lurking around my house while I'm sleeping? ;-) Actually, I did put some thought into my company name, and when people hear it the reaction is usually, "Hey, cool name!" It is very descriptive to the type of business, and what that business does. Short, sweet, impossible to miss-spell.

I'm starting to think it wouldn't be worth my time. Especially with the concern that they keep me set up for email & a link. I wonder if an option might be for me to keep the domain and I can set it up to point to their servers. That way they could control the site & email, and I would hold the plug???

Oops, you didn't understand my original post. My company name has been registered in Ontario for years. The domain name is the same as my company name. These guys in the US want to use the same company name & domain name, let's face it, it's awesome. I don't think there's any problem using the same company name, and if there is, I had it first.

I don't want to be a jerk. I would like to see the domain name put to better use, I've sure neglected my website. I think these guys are probably pretty fresh out of university. A very well-known, expensive university, judging by his email address.

I want to see some solid numbers with reasoning behind them when I get up tomorrow morning, or I'll have to put all of DPC on time-out.

:-)

Thanks for your replies!
