Any news on what Canon may or may not be releasing soon? |

I hear they're changing their name....they had the dawning revelation that after decades they've been mispelling it due to a poor translation due to a typo in an English-Japanese dictionary.
They will be changing their name and all product labelling to the correct spelling of Cannon

I'm afraid the Vatican may find that in violation of Canon Law ...

I wonder if that is the true reason and motivation behind the name change. (All these new stricter laws, the Vatican probably sued for copyright infringement and Canon couldn't show the judge any prior use on their part that predated the Vatican's use of Canon.

ROFL....
Only wondering because I am about to buy a 1Ds Mark II, but if canon is going to replace it, then I will hang onto the cash and wait. |

IMHO, I'd wait the 2 months. If you were simply upgrading from an old Rebel to a 20D, it wouldn't be too big of a deal. But when buying a camera in the $4,000-$8,000 range. And such announcements just over the horizon. I'd wait...
Your 20D is not a bad camera and will do you fine for the next couple of months. But with the spring announcement just around the corner (and the fact that Canon's announcements are usually followed by delivery stock within a few weeks). It is worth the wait.
a) if it's nothing more than a new 2.5" screen and an "n" added to the name. You'll be like ah...waiting didn't matter. But now you'll either have a larger viewfinder and enhanced performance. Or, save a few hundred $$$ on the older unit.
b) in not waiting you could find yourself having just expended thousands of $$$ and had you waited 4 weeks found yourself with a larger screen, more megapixels, faster camera and maybe even a dust removal system. All for about the same price.
Anyways, in this case, and since you are looking at a big expenditure - I'd wait!
Sadly, I was in this same boat and didn't wait regarding the iPod I bought for my mom. 3 weeks later they came out with the iPod Video. Had I waited she'd have gotten 30gig instead of 20gigs, a much larger screen, and it'd have been half as thick. All for the same cost.
:(
It's technology, there will ALWAYS be new things on the horizon. So you don't want to keep waiting forever. But on the other hand, when you are nearing the release cycle - it's often worth it to hold off a little longer.

THE NEXT 1 SERIES WON'T BE UNTIL THE END OF THIS YEAR, sorry caps lock. Then it will be a full 24months in the product cycle.
The 30D should be next month. And I hear it will leap the D200...

What about printers? I'd like to see a cheap good quality A2+ printer!

Well, surfed...... only rumours but people hoping 30D will be better then the 200D from Nikon. 10+ M, 7 fps, better noise reduction(different censor obviously), bigger this and that, sealed, etc...
Are you sure no new series on on the 1Ds Mark II. |

Druid, what motivates you to move to the 1Ds Mark II over the 20D?
That's a large investment, and it might be a worthwhile one. But just curious why the 1Ds MKII over 20D/5D/35D ?
I still think there is a good possibility of a 1Ds MKIIn being announced. *shrug* |

I've heard that Canon is in a 24 month product cycle for the 1 series. SO it would be october of this year.

Okay, Thats when my next contract work finishes with big bonous. My current contract ends Jan 31, 2006.
Reason for the 1Ds Mk II is pixel count and full frame, without spending 30k for a more exotic full frame higher pixel count. |

Some new products...
Just Kidding, they are suppose to introduce a 20D replacement. I'm sure they'll announce a couple of lenses as they seem to do.
Last August they introduced 4 products, the IIN, 5D, 24-105L, and 70-300IS.
The 5D has a banding issue with AI Servo, the 24-105L had flare issues, and it looks like the 70-300IS has image softness issues when the lens is extended in portrait position.
I just hope that this time they'll improve design and quality control so that only half of their new products will be faulty.

I'm a little concerned that new cameras will be on the back burner. They're going to start producing TV's, and I just hope that they keep upgrading the camera line instead of focusing solely on the televisions. I haven't heard anything about cameras yet, just the TV's.
(begin ramble)
I had planned on buying a Rebel XT, and then I went to Circuit City last weekend and got to check out the 20D... and with prices dropping (I would expect) in the next month or so, I think I'm going to hold out for the 20D. But I can't wait to check out the 20D replacement. :)
(cease rambling here) |

Rumours...
50D is to replace 10D - 10.5Mp, 5.5 fps, 5D's autofocus unit, bigger LCD
Moving farther afield.. 3000D - a 6mp dLSR for $500, maybe a bit less. No RAW, probably other limitations.
perhaps a slight upgrade to the 1D Mk2 n.
I have no clue about the p&s, prosumer, printers, etc.
I have no idea on lenses...not sure what is missing in their lineup...perhaps a 50-150 APS sensor sized IS lens?
