Can you really call it an SLR in that case?
Or is it just a digital camera with interchangeable lenses?

So the Canon EOS RT and Nikon F2h are not SLR's? :P
But yeah, more like SLV or SLEV. whatever. Interchangeable Lens EVF. |

As long as it uses SLR, then it is a SLR camera. |

a camera that uses one lens that reflects the image to a viewfinder by means of a mirror. Hmm, I guess a pentaprism should be in place for this "live preview" :)

Not entirely sure how an EVF or live preview enhances a photographer's experience.. personally.
And a flip out LCD screen? I'd have it broken within a month. lol. No thanks. :)
What happened to cameras that just took good photos? This trend toward gadgetry and silly features really worries me a little. |

Possibly the camera just has the sensor always on, and electronically turns the capture on/off...
I read something a while back -- and that may explain it if it's a CCD sensor and not a CMOS -- I believe with a CMOS, it's impossible...
If that's it, it's actually a good design -- less moving parts to break, but then your CCD would technically always be exposed, and pointing your camera directly at the sun for a long period of time *could* damage the sensor...it would also allow for some insane flash sync speeds -- basically limited to the duration of the flash...
--
All of this is speculation -- and, worse yet, speculation that is based off of information I remember reading some time in the past from an un-rememberable source...so believe at your own risk.

hehehe.. EVF and live preview wouldn't help you out that much there. an LCD on top of the camera, or a device like kyebosh linked to would. (Or the flip out LCD.. but yikes, that's a lot of money to have flip-flopping' around) :)

Soon after I got my 10D, I bumped into a Canon representative. After discussing how much I liked the 10D, I asked him when Canon was going to make a DSLR with a live preview. He sneered at me and said "Oh, they'll never do that, DSLRs are for serious photographers. They don't need live preview". I don't know if this guy was just exceptionally stupid (and condescending!) or if DSLR makers really think that, but I'd certainly use live preview to take shots I couldn't otherwise (like over crowds, holding the camera out a window, etc.). |
