Hi Folks
I need to decide this within the next hour or so:-
We're creating a website called fsquaredimages from which we'll be selling prints of our photography directly to the public. The site will have a shopping cart/ payment system and all orders will come directly to us. We'll print and send orders ourselves as we don't envisage this being a high-volume business anytime soon.
I'm just about to order a marketing card for the website.
The main text will read:
Photography by Pete & Kavita Favelle
I'm trying to decide what subtitle to use in smaller font as the next line.
Here are options I'm considering:
A series of images from around the world
A series of fine art images from around the world
A series of fine art photographic prints
Fine art prints on paper and canvas
Or anything else anyone can suggest.
The only other bit of text will be the website address as the website will have further information and email contact details.
Thanks in advance
Kavita
EDIT: Am gonna put this on hold till Friday as I'm not sure so I don't want to order until I am and I'm at client site tomorrow and out tomorrow night so am gonna review it on Friday AM!

Given that research shows you have somewhat less than a tenth of a second to grab their attention, I think the fourth of your choices is best. It summarizes the actual product most concisely -- if they're not looking for "fine art photographs" it doesn't matter what the subject is.
Maybe yet another line below that along the line of
Images from around the World
followed by a few examples ... a lion, a penguin, and one of London should cover the gamut nicely : ) |

I agree with GeneralIE. The fourth is the one I like most.
Congratulations on your web and good luck. |

I'd tend to go with the last one as well...seems to me that 'a series of' is a lot of words not saying much.
Or just to throw in a couple more suggestions:
Fine art images from around the world
Fine art photographs from around the world

Personally, I don't like the "A series of" of the first three. Without that, I think they would be contenders, too. In fact, I'd then pick "Fine Art Images from Around the World". As they are, I agree, the 4th is the best.
Edited to add this is scary. Kirsty's post is so similar to mine. Or mine is so similar to hers since she posted 20 seconds earlier :)

Hmmm
This is EXTREMELY helpful, thanks folks.
I'm now leaning towards
Fine art prints from around the world
(prints rather than images seems more expressive of what the site sells)
Works?
So it would be:
Photography by Pete & Kavita Favelle
Fine art prints from around the world (in a slightly smaller font)
www.fsquaredimages.co.uk

Actually...
Does Fine art prints from around the world suggest that it's a collaborative site with artists from everywhere or does it suggest that the images themselves are taken all around the world?
How about
Fine art prints of the world around us
No. Too pretentious!
This IS helping though!

Hi Kavey,
I agree with Franziska Lang that the "Series" should be cut. It implies a very limited selection.
I think "Fine Art From Around the World" would be perfect.
"Prints" is also limiting and i think it should be removed.

Hi Gringo
Thanks for your input...
Definitely already decided to drop the "series" bit after the other contributors here have made similar comments.
The print bit I'm not so sure about.
I want the card to make it clear that this isn't just a site that showcases photographs but where prints of the images are available.
Hmmm... not sure now...
Any more thoughts?

Well, you said "prints on canvas"
Giclées are prints on canvas, but they are worth more.
Why market just prints when you can simply include prints in the fine art you sell? |

It's not that I want to limit to prints on paper...
The worry I have is that if I just say "fine art images..." that there's nothing to indicate that visitors can BUY the stuff and that I'm not just advertising an online gallery of images purely for them to view...

See, you already said "Photography", so images and/or prints is redundant.

Hmmm
And what do you think about the "around the world" bit?
Also, had suggestion:

Pete and Kavita Favelle
Fine Art Photography
keeping it simple is better..
the around the world will give people thoughts that others are submitting photos too...and doesnt give you the opening to expand

I like the "Around the world" bit.. It makes me want to see it. You might have pictures from places I've never been before. (and even if you haven't been everywhere yet, you will continue to add to the gallery as you can).
I don't like the work "prints" at all.

Thats interesting too...
Nice and simple.
Does it suggest we're selling our services as photographers rather than our work?
I'm picking here but I'm just throwing this about before I put the order in...

If someone offered you enough money to get you to provide your services, would it make a difference?
To me, that is the entire idea behind marketing yourself. Get them to want what you do.
I'm sure your site will show them clearly that you are selling your works, hopefully they will want you to do custom work for them too. You don't have to take on additional work if you don't want to, but it's always great to know people want you, don't you think?

You've got my intention with "around the world" perfectly. Because we love to travel many of the images will be from our travels and I wanted to express that. We'll initially have Antartica, Africa and Italy, shortly joined by Peru and Galapagos (not yet processed).
The main image on the card btw is my Tomboy image.

Neither of us is interested in event photography at all but thinking on it, I have taken a "fine art" photo to commission for a friend's wedding - she and her husband gave me an idea of what they were looking for and I shot to that brief.

I love that "Tomboy" shot of yours. (It's a keeper).
All of this is just my opinion Kavey, but I hope it's helpful to you.
It's always ok to say no to the work you don't want to do, but from a marketing perspective, I would leave your options as open as possible. You never know, if someone likes your work well enough, they may pay for your next trip.
Cheers! |

Thats a fantastic option you want to leave open
putting the kicker as "Fine art photography from around the world" makes it look like you are a gallery owner who is commissioning people from around the world. If you put over or under your web site address "photographed around the world" woudl give people the idea that you photographed it all over the world

I agree Di, if it were a stand alone line.

But it's not alone, it looks more like this:

Thanks!
Basically, I always get an amazing response (in terms of loving the card) to the normal business card I did to promote the prints when I was selling them to raise funds for charity.
(The middle one)
So I'm doing same kind of thing but on a postcard...
