Actually, no -- at least not in the time I've been here. The challenges and the forums have always been considered separate entities -- with the single exception of not destroying anonymity, that is the only site etiquette.
There are some that disagree with posting outtakes, there are some that disagree with any discussion of the current challenges -- but it is encouraged by the site, that is after all what the 'Current Challenge' forum is for.
Besides, restricting what sort of photos can be posted for review is not in the sites best interest. There is a challenge on the color blue right now, should we forbid any images exhibiting prominent blue elements? How about romantic images -- there's a challenge for that as well. Actually, there is a free study going on this month -- maybe we should not post any photos at all until it's over.
Start restricting what photos can be presented for review (with the exception of those restricted by the TOS) and the greatest benefit of the site vanishes.
IMO -- of course. ;)

I hope your stats match up, and prove you worthy or you're in trouble :-) |

Once again I defer to your 10 challenges entered. At least you are active in the forums. That being said, you have apparently not seen all the posts that have asked that outtakes not being posted during the voting period. In your case I can take that as an ovesite... |

I see no difference between posting outtakes or any other images. Are you now questioning whether there are benefits to posting pictures on DPC forums? Certainly not... |

You are spinnin' it. My question was (yes Brent I'm repeating myself) What is the benefit to this site to post outtakes during the voting period? I will listen... |

I've seen them -- the same few people destroying threads in a forum that, if they truly believed the challenges should not be discussed, they have no reason to visit. It is the same sad story of the few (I'll generously call it a couple of dozen) trying to enforce their ideals on the community as a whole -- and causing havoc (such as this derailed thread) when they can't get their way.
I also recall you came unglued in a recent thread when you felt someone was telling you what you should or should not do -- does the right to decide what is proper not apply to the rest of us?
But while we're at it, what's happened? I don't recall you taking every little thing so personally before, but you sure have been lately.

As soon as a challenge is announced threads start to appear discussing the interpretation, some go as far as posting ideas to the thread. That is in my opinion just plain rude.
When voting starts we get the threads with outtakes. At this point the entries are finalised and cannot be changed, but the outtakes are in one way competing for attention with the voting process.
By posting an outtake before the challenge vote is complete you are in fact fishing for comments, when it would be nice if the actual entries received more of the commenters attention.
In my opinion both these types of posting in the forum are 'bad form' and should be discouraged. |

That had to do with some one trying to say that no one had the right to say what a thirteen year old child had the right to click on on the internet. I am a parent. Put it into context and it makes sense!

If you take a little time out and look at most outtake threads over the last 10 months or so you will see that I've posted almost ver botem the same response over all of them that I've seen. I call that consistent...

You can take it that way if you wish. I was simply trying to compare my passion for this site against yours. You appear out of the blue and 'know' what is best for the site and what isn't. I have been here through thick and thin. I have been on the winnin' side and losin'. I am always here. You appear out of thin air and know what is best for the site. When you can answer the question put before you with the passion that I have, I will be here to debate you. |

And there was I thinking that, as a paying member of this site, I had as much right to join in these discussions as any other paying member. Obviously I must be accepted by the likes of you before that can happen. Well, us "New boys" should know our place I suppose, so I will take my "Passion" for photography elsewhere and ask the Council to delete me from the site until I grow up a little more.
Thank you for a valuable lesson. |

You can take it that way if you wish... (god damn it Brent, I'm repeating myself again) I don't want you to go away. Just think about the community as a whole and what will make DPC a stronger friendlier happier place to be for all... Common courtesy, site etiquette... |

Debating it in a derailed thread is pointless -- the majority of those that would participate won't know the debate is going on. But in the end, one thing I've learned in 'my' time on this site is that there are only 18 opinions that matter -- 16 with funky icons and 2 gold. Either one of the gold trumps all of the funky, even taken all at once.
Both of the gold, in collectively creating this community, put a forum here to 'Discuss the current challenge and how you feel about it or ideas you may haveâ€Â¦'.
But the funky have been given dominion over the community by the golden, and in that capacity they enforce what is the unwritten 'site etiquette'. They edit posts and hide threads for destroying anonymity, for abusive behavior and recently for rednecks (oops) -- but they do not modify threads for posting outtakes or discussing current challenges.
In this the leadership of the funky golden are as one -- let all be at peace.

Dave, I've read your post here three of four times and can not make any sense out of it. I'm gonna write it off as being tired and emotionally drained as far as this thread goes. I don't know if you have a point or not but if you do, please feel free to sleep on it, re-write it and I'll look at it tomorrow.

Great set of pictures. How many, if any, were taken at Tygerberg Zoo. They need all the support that we can give them.
As far as posting them. I'm against it. But it is not important enough to clog up a whole thread. Some things we live with even if we don't agree.
