My wife came home today with yet another new hair style. Ok, so it's not new, she originally had straight hair, but has permed it since she was ten. Anyway, she came home with it straightened -- but it's not permanent yet, she's just wanting to see if she likes it.

She was wondering if the kind people here can help decide what color and/or hairstyle you would suggest. Her job requires she stay reasonably conservative (no unnatural colorations or such). So what do you think?

She was telling me that last time it was straight she was a blonde (but her hairs darkened since then), so I was thinking going back blonde would be good. She's thinking to keep blonde highlights but otherwise a reddish brown (somewhat like it is in the photo). What do you think, what color works well with her face?

What cuts/styles? I like it long (it was at her waist when we met), but she keeps cutting it shorter and shorter and shorter. :( She's looking at short and straight, but is open for suggestions.

Here are a couple of photos to get an idea of how she looks.

This one is my first challenge entry (color version) and shows her with longer hair and more natural color.

and here is a snapshot just taken of her today

Thanks

Tell her to start growing it out. I like long hair.

Actually, I have no preference... I love them all ;-)
Getting them to return the favor is the tricky part.

I've been telling her that since the first time she cut it -- but everytime it gets a decent length she cuts it off again.

This looks better...

...BUT - I read somewhere that advanced calculus combined with modern structured analysis will take the curl right out of your hair. Tell her to be careful with that stuff.

tell her that she should wear it and color it whatever way she is most comfortable with herself, and that you'll love her the same either way.
The more comfortable she is with herself, the more comfortable life with her will be.

With all the different hair styles she's had -- that can be taken as a given.

She is very lucky she has a fairly strong oval face shape which allows her to wear her hair many different ways. The shorter cut gives her a newer look and there are other options in styling it. If she blowdrys/curls it under it will give her a dressier look.

If I were doing her hair I would suggest some wispy bangs, but if she has worn it curly for years she probably would go for that. She has the best face shape there is but her forehead is a little taller in proportion to the rest of her face. Wispy bangs would make her face shape perfect. :)

Her hair color looks great with her beautiful brown eyes. It really brings them out nicely.

I have done hair for 25 years and love doing makeovers when someone is ready for a change. I think your wife's new look is great on her.

Bren,

She tries bangs every now and then -- but in a month or so she gets upset they aren't the same length as the rest of her hair. Then when they get a bit longer than they are in her recent photo (just past her ears) she will up and have all of her hair cut to the match the length of her bangs so it will all be the same length again. ...and here we go again! I'm sure she will have a different view of this when she wakes up.

As far as styles go, straight is definitely new for her after having it permed for 2 decades -- but it was done with a flat-iron, so it will go away once she washes it (some of it already had in the photo).

Again, she will likely tell a different version of this once she gets up, but when she gets her hair done she all too often lets the person doing it get away with telling her that because her hair is so thick there was nothing they could do about it. She has come home with many hack-jobs because the stylist didn't know how to handle her hair. It hasn't been every time -- but she has heard it enough the first thing out of her mouth when we started talking about what she was thinking of doing with her hair was that 'it is so thick...'. From a person view, it is thick -- thick enough she breaks teeth out of combs, and I can't run my fingers thru it without pulling -- but I wonder how much of that is from the artificial curling she has had done for so long. Any insight you have on that would be most helpful.

Thanks for the reply -- even though I'm not too excited about starting the whole bang thing again. ;)

How about low-lighted and high-lighted, still a little short and just scrunch it dry if it has a little bit of natural wave? I vote for wispy bangs too.

Hi, thought I would give my take on it.

I too have very thick hair, but mine is also naturally curly. So, I understand her frustration when she hears, not much can be done.

Well, I don't think that is true.

I think for her, if she wants to try, which is what I do. I use flat iron to straighten and soften my hair (which is nice!), and then I use a ceramic curling iron on the ends, to make the bottom not so blunt. I don't use either of them on my bangs, for them I just blow dry. And yes, I think she would look good with wispy bangs. But as you said, she gets upset they aren't the same length. Maybe with new style, she would like the bangs better. Not sure.

As far as hair color goes, with those beautiful eyes, she could go either way... lighter (as woohoopepper said, hi-lights/lo-lights) or she could go darker even and those eyes would just pop.

It is wonderful though that you support her no matter what she does.

I have to say I much prefer curly BUT straight is ok as long as it isn't just perfectly staight just lying there like it has no life...did that come out clear? I think the hair has to show a little life to it, some sort of flip or curl or body or bounce. And depending on the face shape, of course, I prefer about shoulder length hair.

My wife thought I totally hated her hair when she straighted it but when I explained that it didn't look like it had any life or body she felt a little better.

Certainly the shorter hairstyle looks better on her. She needs to add some whispy banks, to look younger and more refreshed, and she certainly needs to darken here hair, so it will have a natural shine to it--naturally dark hair, when bleached, looks coarse and dry.

I have very thick and curly hair and tried long and short styles--it normally depends on how I feel. I had gone through SO many hair stylist--because most of them do now know what to do with thick hair. I finally found a place that charges and arm and a leg, but is worth every penny of it.

I think that your wife would look great with brown hair and blond highlights in it, especially around the face. Like in this photo of Lisa Rina. (the one at the top and the bottom of the screen in a blue tank top).

I have naturally thick and curly hair. I had the Japanesse straightening done. Best thing I ever did. My hair is now so soft and full of body, though straight. I couldn't get a brush, let alone a comb through my hair before. Now my husband can run his fingers through my hair without pulling. It's very expensive, but so worth it. I have a relative that owns a beauty salon, so I only pay for materials. But, if you can afford it I say DO IT!

I totally understand the bangs thing. :) I am not really saying strong bangs but just some wispy bangs that she could just blow dry with a round brush. Just a few hairs falling randomly on her forehead. Not curled but not totally straight either. I'll see if I can find a picture.

As far as it still being curly that is a plus. She can blow dry it straight when she wants or wear it curly by just scrunch drying.

As for it being so thick, she should count her blessings. You can always take some out, but without spending a bunch of money on extensions you can't add to it. She could have some notched out which would lighten the weight on the ends some plus give it a little more lift. It also airs out the ends when she wants it curly giving it a softer curly look.

It's really funny that you posted this with what I have going on right now. I had decided to retire from doing hair about 4 years ago and concentrate on photography. I started a small studio in the DFW area and it was just starting to get going. But my husband hated his job and my father passed away so we decided to move to a small town where my dad had lived. I started advertising for photography here and have had a few shoots but nothing to keep me busy. I could freelance but we live so far out that it would be so much driving.
We live down the street from the 3rd largest lake in Texas so although it is a small town we have tons of people who are weekenders and summer people. I have decided to get my hair license back and open a small salon here but I am also going to put my photography studio in the back so I can still do it. I am going to offer packages where I do the hair, makeup and a photo shoot. I am really excited about getting back to doing hair but still being able to do studio photgraphy some. This thread and talking about hair is making me even more excited. It's going to take a few months for it all to come together but I am so looking forward to it.

Talk about having thick curly hair ... I used to hate mine, but it's pretty easy to take care of now. Wash, scrunch, leave the house. My bangs are sorta goofy though because the curls have a mind of their own.

Okay.. First - yes, I've been very bored today.

I tried a few hairstyles on her picture and uploaded the image for ya. :D It's a fairly large image...

Edit: Angelfire doesn't like to share. Here's the URL.. for whatever reason, I can't link it or Angelfire throws up a roadblock.

Eh, it was much easier to stick with one color than to try to change them.. and yeah, it's do that or work. :)
