I am now starting to look to buy a scanner. It will be primarily to scan some of the old pictures, but I also would like to be able to scan 35mm. Is there a scanner that does both?
I have used a scanner one of my friends has to scan photos, but it requires a lot of retouching afterwards. Is there a scanner that has good resolution?
As you can see I am a bit confused. Please help me make a good choice.

I use an Epson Photo 3200. This photo was taken in 35mm film and scanned as a 4x6 print then process in photoshop. The 3200 also does negatives and slides, although there are better scanners if that is your sole purpose. For general scanning, the 3200 is very good.

There are a number of scanners by Epson and other manufacturers that are normal flatbed scanners, but also come with a transparency unit for scanning negs and slides. In some cases it's a lightbox type thing that sits on top of the scanning surface instead of the lid, in other cases it's an extra slot built into the lid.
They aren't quite as good as a dedicated film scanner, but they can do quite a decent job.
Sorry, can't advise on specific models, the one I use is 2-3 years old now. But have a look at Epson's website, I'm sure you'll see some on there. |

Have you considered a slide duplicator adapter for your camera? This attachment fits in place of your regular lenses and has a holder for slides with a light diffuser. Very reasonably priced on eBay, these make quick work of converting slides to digital. |

I have the Epson Perfection 2450. The bed is 8-1/2"x12" and has a built in transparency adapter along with slide/film holders. These holders will handle film & mounted slides from 35mm up to 4"x5". I am pretty happy with it. Easy to use and dependable.

Over the weekend I had access to and used a flatbed scanner for negatives - the Epson Perfection 4990. This is going on my wishlist at B&H. |

Thanks everyone. I feel more educated now. At least I will know what to look for when I get out to shop for it. |
