In Feb canon will announce: (so the rumour i found says)

50D with some upgrades over the 20D:
10.3Mp
5.5 fps
AF engine from the 5D

3000D Sub-Rebel - 3000 series with 50D's sensor, 3fps
less bells and whistles - Sub $600

New flagship - IDsMkIII - 20Mp, high-speed reduced crop mode
8fps etc.

Of this, I can't see the 3000D being 10Mp, but otherwise sounds very interesting!

Canon will release 1 new camera during PMA. Which will be the 20D replacement. It won't be called 50D, that's for sure :-)

Rumours are just that..rumours. But canon has had 3000 series film cameras, is a bit behind in low-end dSLRs at the moment.

Why not 50D? One step below the 5D, two digit number - it fits. what D30, just to be confused with the 30D? D50 is a Nikon, but minolta has a 5D...more believeable than the suggestion they call it the Elan D.

I think I'd rather have the new 1DsmkIII, and if the rumours were true, I think it would get the 21mpixel Kodak sensor.

can't wait til canon makes a fullframe 35mm digital with the new 39mpixel sensor.. it's bigger than the frame so the imagequality would be much better than 35mm film :)

I heard a rumor from a very reliable source about 6 months ago that the next big canon upgrade would inlcude a new mount and a new lens design. Not talking about the 1Ds Mark III, after that. They were looking into a curved sensor design to pack in more resolution. So the lens would have to be designed to allow a curved image projection. Interesting idea.

I've heard pretty much the same rumors of the 50D.

I heard the 1Ds Mark III was slated for end of the year though.

Whatever it is, I'm interested. Looking for a new body.

It would sure make the lens design easier--they would reduce or eliminate the need for aspherical lenses. If they could design a foveon-type sensor, they could reduce the need for chromatic adjustment in the lens (just set the R,G and B sensors at the respective focal points of each wavelenth). Sounds like a nice dream.

I'm not a semiconductor expert, but I think the photosites would be the same size regardless of whether the plane they were on was flat or curved. And I think it would be tougher (and more expensive) to cut a thicker slab of silicon, grind in curved sensor blocks, then polish them, etc. Then you have to build new equipment to project each layer of the sensor, you'd probably have new issues with gas flow over the curved set of sensors, etc. These aren't insurmountable problems, but they are probably expensive problems to fix.

Some ICs are made with etched "trenches". If used in a camera sensor, this may allow the control circutry to be on the side of the trench, and the photosite to be on the valley (or more likely on the "tabletop") between trenches. This would allow you to use a higher percentage of the sensor to gather photons, which may increas the effective ISO of the camera. On the other hand, the sensor now has a microfilter with R,G, and B lenses. If these lenses can be shaped correctly, you may be able to focus the incoming light onto the photosites and get pretty much the same effect as the trenches will give you.

1D MkIII (or probably a new name) will be a new generation PRO camera that will merge the 1D and 1Ds series into one. I don't expect this until August at the earliest. Canon seem to relese updated products in 18 months cycle. That means 20D is up for replacement in February.

I'm still not convinced Canon will release a 3000D in feburary. When PictureStyles was introduced in 5D/1DMkIIn, they claimed it would be included in all new products, but I didn't see it mentioned in the spec sheet. But again, I don't know. Only thing I know for sure; I'll be pre-ordering the new 1D series the same day it's released. :-)

yeah, the new 1dmk2 replacement prolly will be demo-ed during the World Cup Finals (soccer) and made available for sale after.

well debateably 11mp already is better than 35mm film. The 39mp sensor is for a 645 camera isn't it? It wouldn't be compatible with any of the canon lenses as the circle of their lenses is too small to cover the larger size. With that said, the compairison i saw with the 39mp sensor actually was compairing it to LARGE format film 4 x 5 inch film and did pretty darn well against it i might add.

I think the 35mm sensor is about reaching the top end for MP. I don't see them going over 25 MP with any real gain. But really, for 95% of the things that are shot and printed, why do you need more.

I personally do becausse I like to print big, but for my magazine work, 8 MP is plenty most of the time.
