I've entered two contests with photos you all helped me choose...and won both of them!

It's time again to help me decide (please?)

I posted a few of my Icefest photos the other day. I've narrowed the entry possibilities down to 5. Icefest is an ice sculpting competition and exhibition/festival type event in my hometown. The contest guidelines are to take a photo of any aspect of the event...people, art, whatever. The event this year had an underwater / ocean theme.

This year, the first night was almost 60 degrees and everything was melting fast. The second day was a bit colder (probably low 40's), but it was sunny and the artwork was in much worse condition than in previous years. The first night sculptures are placed around our courthouse and lit from behind with colored spotlights.

I can enter two entries. They pay for 1-5 places, plus one award for best black and white. I usually like to enter one color and one bw entry (however, if you don't like either bw, let me know which two color would work.) Photos will be 8x10 matted (not framed) in 11x14. No editing restrictions. So there you have it.

Please let me know which two of these you think I should enter. Thanks!

(EDITED to add - although water drops are cliche' here, keep in mind that this is an amateur contest and it is not DPC.)

"Moonlight Sail" bw
"Blue Whale"
"Melting Away"
"Trust"
"Pirate Ship" bw

I like "Melting Away." It's especially appropriate if one of the big stories of the event was the warm weather and the melting art.

Moonlight Sail & Melting Away would be my choices.

My one concern with "Melting Away" is the focus. It is in focus, but sometimes water drops look out of focus (if that makes sense!) If you think it looks in or out of focus, that would help be a determining factor for me. Also keep in mind that these will be 8x10 (not very large.) Thanks for the comments so far!

Moonlight Sail and Melting away are very nice. I like Pirate Ship too. But, the background seems to 'noisy'. Since there's no editing restrctions........

Yeah...last year I won for the best black and white, and I did it by totally blacking out the background. I'm just not sure that doing that two years in a row would be as effective. That's also why I left one light in the "sailing" pic and used it somewhat for effect.

These are the same judges they've had for the last 4 years, except for one new one. The new judge is a pro that I beat out in the other photography contest last summer :( The entries are not annoymous (names are on the entry forms on the backs.) I'm not sure how they do the judging - if they can see those forms or not.

Thanks for your input. I'm not trying to be difficult! :) Just giving a bit more info that might be helpful?

Good work Judy! Difficult to choose, but think my favs are 'Melting Away' and 'Moonlight Sail' too. Just a thought......at all possible to have a bit more room round the sculpture in Moonlight Sail? Crop just feels a bit tight to me.

That's a good point. There really isn't much more room in the original, but with the black I believe I can just pad the black a bit. Thanks for the idea.
