Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone has an opinion -
I am thinking of selling my Quantaray AF 70-300mm f/4.0 - 5.6 LD Tele-Macro for a similiarly priced Canon with about the same range. I paid $159 for the Quantaray and the Canon ranges from $150 to $199. In general, would a Canon low end lens be better than a Quantaray brand at about the same price, or does it depend on the specific lenses?
Thanks for any input. |

It definitely depends on the specific lenses. I assume you're referring to the Canon 75-300? You might see some improvement, but the 75-300 is not that well thought of, even among "consumer" lenses.

Yes, I was referring to the Canon 75-300. Perhaps I'll wait until I can afford a higher level of lens. Thanks |

The new Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is considerably better according to recent reviews. But it's 4x the price of the 75-300... |

I've heard a lot of good things said about the Sigma 70-300mm APO lens that will run around 189-199 dollars on B+H and it has a macro mode too. I would imagine it can give a serious run for the money for the Quantaray. I've never heard anyone say anything good about that brand of lenses.
If you go to the $550 dollar level, check out the 70-200 F4.0L by Canon as a second option. |

Don't feel bad, the lenses are labeled Quantaray and all, I don't actually believe there are any identifying marks on the actual lens that would tell you it's Sigma - I was just clarifying the two are the same ;) |

Quantaray carries lenses that are made by a number of different companies... Sigma, Tokina, and Tamron. From what I've heard they are identical, save for the branding. |

The sigma 70-300 4-5.6 APO macro super is a great lens. It must be the APO version.
The canon is soft above 200mm.
quantarray is a ritz/wolfe house brand, and lower end stuff.
I am selling one on ebay right now -
