I tell you what, if Sony makes a DSLR with their laser AF system, KM matrix metering, and Anti-shake on it....
I may not really care that it doesn't say KM on it. Especially if they put Zeiss on the menu. |

they need to establish a 'bank of nikon'
not surprised about konica/minolta. both made some good models, but as a whole a pretty crappy manufacturer.

Sony press release:
//www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/200601/06-0119E/
Under this agreement, on March 31 2006, Sony will receive certain assets from Konica Minolta PI that are necessary for the development, design, production and so forth of digital SLR cameras compatible with Konica Minolta PI's “Maxxum/Dynax lens mount system”.** Sony will accelerate development of new digital SLR cameras based on and compatible with the Maxxum/Dynax lens mount system with a view to marketing these models this summer.
On the basis of its ongoing “selection and concentration”, Konica Minolta Group will concentrate on its core “business technologies” field and its strategic “optics and display devices” field and withdraw from camera business*** as of March 31, 2006. At the same time, Konica Minolta PI will partially transfer certain assets related to digital SLR cameras to Sony.
From April 1 2006, Konica Minolta PI will consign the customer service operations for Konica Minolta cameras and related products* to Sony, and Sony will implement service operations from that date onward.
* Konica Minolta, Konica and Minolta brand film cameras, digital still cameras, lenses, accessories etc.
** An original lens mount system to connect camera body and lens adopted in Konica Minolta Maxxum/Dynax series SLR cameras
*** Excludes production of digital SLR cameras and interchangeable lenses for Sony
so... KM is still making the Cameras.
They will all have Sony Brand and Sony customer service and such.
Does that really mean that KM is still making the cameras? |

My first SLR was a Minolta X-370. My grandfather gave it to my for my 14th birtday. I still have it, and it still works. I'm 34 now.
Though, I'm really glad I don't have a Minolta dSLR because you guys do realize this merger with Sony probably means they're going to change their lens mounts AGAIN! The guy who owns the camera shop where I usually do buisness says he thinks that was one of the main things that killed Minolta, they kept changing their lens mounts, and pissing people off. |

Huh? As worried as I am, I can't see any reason for Sony to change lens mounts. FWIW, they've stated that they will continue to develop lenses for that mount. Why would they change after spending nearly a year developing the next generation body for that mount with K-M?
And when have Minolta changed mounts? Once... from manual to AF. A lot less than Canon. As far as I remember, weren't they the pioneers of AF lenses before Canon and Nikon?

That's not how I read it. Maybe I'm dense. Looks like Sony is gonna receive the tooling, among other things, the "assets" necessary to manufacture the cameras themselves, but they should remain compatible with previous KM-mount products.
