Hey guys I need a little help, and I thought this would be the best place to ask it. Alright, I graduated high school last spring and right now I'm attending Southwestern Ilinois College. I'm just taking classes there right now, not going for a degree or anything. I'm taking a photography 1. There are three photography classes 1, 2, and studio. I was thinking about taking 1 of those each semmester, but I'm thinking that's just a waste of time and money if thats not going to get me a degree, I'm just getting experience. So what I want to know is, what is a good school for photography to get a degree of some sort? I just want to take photography classes w/out all that other junk that most colleges make you take. And does anyone have any suggestions if they were in my postition? Thanks. |

Do the other junk also, it's worth the money, time and effort. It's worth from any point of view, even if the teachers are bad, even if the curricula are bad, even if the peers are bad. You're still young and you'll get enough chances to earn money and do the thing you want to do. The point is exploring the world, and the other junk is exploration. Who knows, maybe you'll find something interesting there. |

I agree with gjumi.. education is a benefit any way you look at it. Take as much as you can, be open minded and embrace what is offered for what it is.. take what you want from the experiences and leave the rest. You still achieve the end goal of the photography stuff.. but in the meantime you have opened the door to so much more which will only contribute to the depth of your photography .. :)
((in my opinion of course ;) good luck in whatever path you choose to take)) :) |

Photography means learning. I hate photography. I quit.
Sorry I've got a long work weekend ahead of me. Started this morning at 7:00am and have to go till Sunday 11:00pm with no sleep. 40 hours straight.
Thank god for DPC. wooooohooooooo. |

Ummm.....Actually all that other "junk" as you call it is pretty important. Hopefully you are smart enough to realize that beforehand.
That said, there's a pretty good photography program at University of Illinois Carbondale.

I've seen it a few times here, and I just signed up for NYIP. www.nyip.ccom
I've been looking at it alot longer than I knew this site existed, but haven't had the cash until now.
I want at least a 2 or 4 year degree, but I consider this as a seperate "minor" portion of my future degree, allowing me to focus a bit more on either a marketing, communication or some other similar degree that I can use to either supplement my technical skills, or to keep the money flowing and keep my photography as a hobby.
I've recently had a shove in the direction of another new career, not sure where I'm going to land. But that is the fun of life. |
