I always thought the 300D embeded a JPEG into the RAW file, how come I never see one? What am I doing wrong? When I select quality on the menu, there is only a RAW selection, no RAW + JPEG

How about the 10D? I thought I use to see jpg's as well as crw...but now I don't.

It does--it embeds a JPEG, but not at full resolution. Still it's bigger than enough for many uses, especially cataloging.

You can extract them easily with Breezebrowser. Just select the directory and tell it to "extract JPEGs". If you want, I can check and tell you what resolution they should be

www.breezesys.com

BTW - I don't use that software anymore, except for extracting JPEGs. And I use those mainly if I want to keep files offline, so I create a folder to hold the place of the images, and these JPEGs are good for that.

On the XT, RAW+JPEG means that it stores a separate JPEG file, not an embedded one. (Though it may store an embedded one as well!)

so what's the point of embedding a JPEG if Canon doesn't supply a way to extract it? Is it just for the preview?

If you have the "hack" in place, you can even control the quality of the embedded JPEG.

I presume it's for preview; the res for the 300D is 2048x1360, which is a pretty respectable size.

Interestingly, the CR2 file's embedded jpeg is smaller: 1536x1024!
